History between the Pass and the Sea

Fiorenzuola di Focara was one of the four castles or fortified settlements built between the 10th and 13th centuries to create a defensive system for controlling the Siligata Pass. Documents dating from the 12th century have been preserved for the Chiesa di Sant’Andrea. A plaque on a door commemorates Dante’s verses in Inferno XVIII about the wind of Focara. In 2023 and 2024, the town received the recognition of “Borgo Ospite” from I Borghi più belli d’Italia.

Paleontology at the Museo L. Sorbini

The Museo Paleontologico L. Sorbini displays fossil fish, plants, insects and birds from Monte Castellaro and addresses the drying up of the Mediterranean 6 million years ago. The collection includes Italolestes stroppai, a completely preserved holotype of a dragonfly considered unique in the world. A holotype is the scientific reference specimen by which a species is first defined.

Coast, Beach and Rocky Cliffs

From the town centre, the Strada della Marina leads on foot to a small natural beach. The Spiaggia di Fiorenzuola di Focara features rounded stones shaped by the sea, known as “cogoli”.
