Discover Montelabbate: History, Art and Peach Culture

Montelabbate lies in the fertile valley of the Foglia River and combines landscape with an unusually rich succession of historical, artistic and popular traditions. Foglia Valley and Abbadia di San Tommaso

Near the confluence of the Fosso Apsella and the Torrente Apsa, a tributary of the Foglia, lies the Abbadia di San Tommaso in Foglia. Numerous large downy oaks, also known by their botanical name Quercus pubescens, grow in its surroundings. The walkscape Una storia lunga un fiume begins at the Abbadia di San Tommaso. This brings the river, vegetation and a historical starting point for exploring the landscape together in one place, without implying any specific route duration or accessibility.

Castles and Medieval Traces

Castello di Montelabbate was probably built around the 12th century by the abbots of San Tommaso in Foglia. Its surviving fortifications include 15th-century walls with a triangular ground plan and three towers. Castello Farneto represents a different type of historical structure: the small fortified village lies within the walls of a manor house dating from the 10th century, whose structure has remained largely intact.

Churches, Works of Art and Festivals

The Benedictine monastery of the Abbadia di San Tommaso in Foglia was built around the 10th century. Pope Clement II died there on 9 October 1047. Today, only the Romanesque church with its tripartite gabled façade remains of the Abbadia; it was built from sandstone blocks and bricks.

The present-day Chiesa SS. Quirico e Giulitta was built between 1777 and 1814. Inside it is the Cena degli Apostoli by Domenico Peruzzini, dated 1629. In Farneto, the Chiesa di San Martino Vescovo was built in 1420 and rebuilt at the beginning of the 17th century. It houses the Madonna del Rosario by Giangiacomo Pandolfi. The Festa di Sant'Eurosia includes a procession through Farneto with an image of the saint, accompanied by the traditional Scampanata, the ringing of bells. The traditional Festa di Sant'Eurosia returns to Farneto in 2026.

Remembrance and Music

In the summer of 1944, the Gothic Line ran through Quota 111. During a swift and violent bayonet attack on the position at Quota 111, the German occupying force stationed there surrendered, opening the first breach in the Gothic Line. Music also has a long history in Montelabbate: the Corpo Bandistico “G. Rossini” was founded in 1892. It took part in numerous concerts and events in France, including in Caen and Le Havre, in Germany, and in 2002 in the international band marathon event in Prague, Czech Republic. The concert “Rossini serio” at the Chiesa di San Martino in Farneto was part of the Salons Rossini concert series, which was incorporated into the programme of events leading up to the Rossini Opera Festival.

Peaches as a Local Signature

The first Sagra delle Pesche di Montelabbate took place in the summer of 1946. The programme of the 2026 Sagra delle Pesche in Parco Hornburg included tastings of Pesca di Montelabbate peaches. The Sagra delle Pesche programme also included the “Notturna delle Pesche”, a cycling tourism event for mountain bikes and gravel bikes.

Another aspect of regional production is represented by Pescheto Folk, an event held at the end of summer that will take place in 2026 in the peach orchard of Azienda Agricola Pedini on Strada Montelabbatese. There, peach growers and local producers talk about their work and the connection with Pesca di Montelabbate as a characteristic product of the region.
