San Costanzo: Adriatic Views, Trails and Regional Culture

San Costanzo with Panoramic Views

San Costanzo lies at an elevation of approximately 150 metres on the watershed ridge between the Metauro and Cesano valleys. From San Costanzo’s viewpoints, there are views of the Adriatic and the first mountains of the Apennines. For your trip planning, this makes it a place where experiencing the landscape and sightseeing in a historic setting can go hand in hand.

Arrival and Orientation

If you are arriving by car, San Costanzo can be reached via the Fano motorway exit from the north and the Marotta-Mondolfo exit from the south. From the Strada Statale Adriatica, the Strada Provinciale No. 16 “Orcianense” or the Strada Statale 424 della Val Cesano lead to San Costanzo.

Palazzo Cassi and the History of the Town

The Quadreria Comunale and the Sala Archeologica dell'abitato protostorico e della necropoli picena are located in Palazzo Cassi, Piazzale della Vittoria 9, San Costanzo. The Sala Archeologica displays ceramic and bronze finds from a protohistoric settlement and a Picenian necropolis in the municipality of San Costanzo. The settlement was discovered between 1980 and 1985, while the archaeological excavation of the necropolis took place in 1919 and 1920.

The Quadreria Comunale displays altarpieces from the demolished Chiesa di San Silvestro. These include a large painting depicting the Baptism of Constantine, attributed to Rondolino (Terenzio Terenzi). Palazzo Cassi is a historic residence and a literary meeting place. The historic Palazzo Cassi was restored to its former splendour in May 2013. On the second floor are several rooms with a permanent exhibition of tempera paintings and graphic works donated to the community of San Costanzo by Roberto Natale Patrizi (Agrà).

Sightseeing with Practical Planning

The cultural offerings also include the Teatro della Concordia. There is no lift in the Teatro della Concordia; architectural barriers are also present. If you are planning visits for people with different mobility needs, you should take this specific structural situation into account when putting together your itinerary.

Trails through Valleys and Local History

The Valle dei Tufi begins in the centre of San Costanzo, passes through the village of Stacciola and continues to the church of Madonna delle Grotte; it is approximately 3 kilometres long. The historical and nature trail Su e Giù per le Valli is approximately 5 kilometres long and reaches the Fonte Vecchia below the tower of the castle walls. The different lengths make it easier to distinguish between the two trails when planning your itinerary.

The architectural and structural features of the Fonte Vecchia are attributed to the 15th or 16th century; its foundation may date back further. As a result, the Su e Giù per le Valli trail combines natural history with a specific historical reference, without the date of the spring’s origins being considered definitively established.

Crescia and Local Tradition

Crescia d'la Stacciola is traditionally made by hand from soft wheat flour, water, yeast, lard, salt and a little sugar. The Scuola della Crescia has been active since 2010 and teaches those interested the recipe and preparation technique for Crescia d'la Staciola. Anyone who wants not only to taste regional cuisine but also to understand how it is made will find a particularly concrete connection to the local food culture here.

The Sagra della Crescia has been held on the first weekend of August since 1987. This fixed date is relevant to your trip planning if you would like to combine your stay with the traditional festival.
