Montecapraro between the plateau and the Curone

Montecapraro lies on a plateau on the left side of the Curone, at an altitude of 828 metres. At the same time, the village is located on the provincial road to Bruggi. For your travel planning, this provides a clear landscape setting between upland, river connection and mountain road. Montecapraro is also home to the most important nursery of the State Forestry Corps – a distinctive aspect of the village that extends beyond its sacred buildings and hiking trails.

Open landscapes and forested trails

Outside the built-up area, the Montecapraro ridge drops steeply towards the Curone. The landscape includes extensive grazing areas and mineral springs. As a result, open slopes, forested sections of trail and geological features come together within a compact thematic area. Those who wish to combine different landscapes during a journey through the Italian mountains will find tangible points of connection here: the grazing areas contrast with the steep drop towards the river, while the trails lead through beech forests to higher elevations.

Hikes for different day plans

The Stalle Salogni–Rifugio Orsi trail is short and has no challenging changes in elevation. It is therefore also suitable for families and can be combined with other trails in the area. This makes the route a manageable way to get to know the landscape on foot, without committing to a long or technically demanding tour. Connecting it with additional trails leaves room for an individually planned day.

The Stalle Salogni–Rifugio Orsi trail runs through a beech forest and leads to the “Ezio Orsi” mountain refuge. The forest shapes not only the route but also the character of this outing: the trail leads from the surroundings of Stalle Salogni through vegetated slopes to a clear destination. For families and walkers, the combination of a short route, moderate changes in elevation and a mountain refuge is particularly easy to understand.

From the road connection to an Apennine summit

After passing through Montecapraro, you reach Salogni after a few kilometres. At the kilometre-5 sign on the provincial road, the entrance to the Sentiero Salogni–Monte Chiappo is on the right. This information helps you connect the start of the hike with the road directions described, without equating the trail route with the village centre.

The Sentiero Salogni–Monte Chiappo climbs through an extensive beech forest. It reaches Bocca di Crenna, an impressive and windy pass on the watershed between Val Curone and Val Borbera. The trail also leads to an important Apennine summit where the borders of Piemonte, Lombardia and Emilia meet. The hiking experience thus extends from forested ascents to a pass and summit area where three regions come together.

Churches and chapels in Montecapraro

The Church of San Giovanni Battista stands on the edge of the small settlement of Montecapraro. In 1788, it had five altars. The combination of its location on the edge of the settlement and its documented condition in the 18th century gives the place a clear sacred connection, without requiring you to visit a large urban centre. Montecapraro shows its cultural side here in a form directly connected with the settlement.

The Chapel of Madonna del Rosario contains the Mysteries of the Rosary from the early 18th century. The chapel also has a stucco altar. Both details draw attention to the artistic and religious furnishings of the small sacred building. Together with San Giovanni Battista, they create a cultural focal point that can easily be combined with a hike or a leisurely exploration of the settlement, without requiring additional attractions.

A dated festival reference

The celebration of Madonna della Guardia was scheduled for 28 and 29 August 2024. The programme at that time included a concert and a torchlight procession through Montecapraro. A procession and the blessing of cars and motorcycles were also planned.
