Carpeneto combines a medieval settlement history with remarkable church art and nature trails that begin in the town centre. Castle and Historic Town Structure

The oldest element of Carpeneto Castle is a square tower made of stone and brick. The castle is privately owned, occupied by the Marchesi di Chiavari-Pallavicini, and not open to public viewing. The Church of San Giorgio stands approximately on the site of the former parish church, southeast of the castle. The extensive expansion and renovation work that gave the church its present form began in 1719. The enlargement of the choir and the reconstruction of the bell tower were completed in 1727. These two dates belong to the building history of a religious structure whose present form developed through several stages of work.

Art in Carpeneto

The bronze works by Francesco Messina at the chapel of the Garrone family were modelled in 1964 for its hexagonal porphyry structure. The Pietà of Carpeneto depicts the Madonna with the dead Christ in the central fully sculptural group of figures and clearly references Michelangelo’s late works. In Carpeneto, different artistic forms thus emerge directly alongside the older architecture.

The Garrone family crypt in Carpeneto was commissioned by Edoardo Garrone (1906–1963), the founder of the well-known Genoese oil dynasty whose origins lie in Carpeneto. The crypt was designed by the architect Sibilla. Those interested in culture will find both sacred architectural history and the bronze works modelled in 1964 in Carpeneto.

Palazzo Comunale and Former Uses

The present-day Palazzo Comunale, modernised over time, probably dates back to a building erected in 1687. The building incorporated several shops on the ground floor and the teacher’s apartment on the first floor.
