Churches and Historical Traces in Morano Sul Po

Morano Sul Po reveals its history in several very different places: in churches featuring medieval and Baroque artworks, at former industrial sites and in the rice-growing landscape. Those who explore the town attentively will encounter both religious architectural history and memories of work, transport and the former use of individual buildings.

The Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Giovanni Battista was rebuilt on the remains of a small chapel. This chapel, together with the town’s castle, had been destroyed during the conflicts between the marquises of Monferrato and the people of Vercelli. Inside are two precious Baroque wooden confessionals from the Santuario di Crea. The entrance is on Piazza Aldo Moro and Via M. Bavoso, directly beside the road.

The Chiesa di San Pietro Martire also reaches far back into the town’s history. Dominican friars built it before 1400; in the past, the church was attached to a monastery. The right aisle contains a triptych dated 1478. The entrance is directly on Via San Pietro Martire at street level, making it possible to understand the building’s position immediately within Morano Sul Po’s streetscape.

The Chiesa della Santa Trinità dates from before 1608. A brotherhood was based there and formerly provided pilgrims and convalescents with accommodation. This historical function is part of the traditional history of the religious building and should not be equated with a present-day accommodation service. The church entrance is directly on Via Pietro Gallo.

Industrial History with Visible Traces

An unusual testimony to the region’s working and industrial history is the Arco di Morano sul Po. Unione Cementi Marchino, or Unicem di Casale Monferrato, built the parabolic arch structure in 1951 to a design by engineer Guido Sarti. It enabled the cableway to cross the state road safely while transporting cement marl from the Palazzina Borino di Coniolo mine to the cement factory in Morano. The Arco remained in operation until around 1958; this information explicitly indicates an approximate period.

A center dedicated to conveying industrial heritage has been established near the Arco di Morano sul Po. It includes a container called “Heritage in a box” and an interactive web app. The Arco is directly visible from the SP31Bis provincial road in Morano sul Po. Alternatively, you can park in the nearby car park by the “100% moto” shop and view the structure on foot from there.

Another industrial trace can be found in the Due Sture district. There, an old distillery was converted into the Monumento al Lavoro “La Vecchia Fornace”. The Monumento al Lavoro is visible only from the outside. For visitors, this restriction is therefore part of the practical guidance for the site: the architectural impression is formed from the exterior, not through a visit inside.

Grangia di Pobietto and the Rice-Growing Area

The Grangia di Pobietto offers a different perspective on Morano Sul Po. It lies at the center of an extensive rice-growing area on elevated ground, which is safer than the adjacent areas more prone to flooding. This makes the connection between the building and the landscape particularly clear: the Grangia does not stand apart from its surroundings, but amid an area shaped by rice fields.

The Grangia di Pobietto includes a medieval gate tower and part of a wall with a pointed-arch surround. These architectural elements give the site a clearly recognizable historical character. At the same time, the Grangia lies along the VEN.TO cycling route between Venice and Turin. For cyclists, this combines the contemplation of medieval architecture with a route linking two Italian cities.

The Grangia di Pobietto in Morano sul Po also contains a picnic area. This means that a visit to the historic site can be combined with a break in the landscape of the rice-growing area. The combination of the gate tower, wall fragment, elevated position, rice cultivation and cycling route makes the Grangia a distinct focal point alongside the churches and industrial heritage sites.
