Discover Montecastello: History, Trails and Views

Montecastello forms one of the final hill stages of the Basso Monferrato, opposite the confluence of the Tanaro and Bormida rivers. Its location combines a distinctive landscape setting with historic buildings and trails that provide different approaches to the town. Chiesa S.Maria and Sacred History

An important historical reference dates back to 1398: at that time, the parish was transferred to the Chiesa di Santa Maria di Ponzano. The present-day Chiesa S.Maria was built in the 18th century as an enhancement of an older Gothic structure. During this expansion, side aisles with Baroque influences were added. Another historical layer can be seen on the façade. During its restoration in 1935, an old lunette in the tympanum of the main portal was uncovered. It contains a fresco of Christ blessing.

The outer niches of Chiesa S.Maria also deserve attention: they contain marble statues of Saint George, Saint Joseph and Saint Anthony of Padua. You can reach the church by car or on foot; the parking area is accessible to wheelchair users.

The Castello di Montecastello

The Castello di Montecastello was built in the 13th century on the remains of very old fortifications. The complex was completely renovated in the 18th century. In 1739, the S. Carlo chapel, terraces, stairways and wrought-iron elements were added. As a result, this building brings together medieval remnants of fortifications and a later, more pronounced and representative design.

The ground-plan structure of the fortification and the tall tower of the Castello di Montecastello are still discernible. The entire complex is protected by two bartizans, four towers and a wall with a barbican. The Castello can be reached by car or on foot; it can only be visited from the outside. For your planning, this means that the architectural forms, the preserved structure and the exterior appearance of the complex are the main focus.

Marked Trails through the Town and Landscape

The circular trail “Anello di Montecastello” is marked with trail signs bearing the AMC designation and consists of trails 607, 607A, 607B, 623 and 623B. It begins near the Tanaro River and climbs into the town of Montecastello via numerous steps. Anyone planning this trail should consider the ascent and its steps an integral part of the route. The circular trail also reaches Bric Montalbano. In clear weather, the view from there extends across the Po Valley and to the Alpine arc.

A section of the Anello di Montecastello is named “La salita dei Pensieri Indiani”. Along this section, signs display statements by Native American chiefs about respect for nature.

A second orientation option is provided by the hiking trail “Sentiero Valenza - Montecastello”. It begins at the headquarters of the CAI section in Valenza and follows white-and-red trail signs bearing the number 601. In Montecastello, it passes close to the castle and ends at the nearby headquarters of the Pro Loco. For day planning, this gives you a choice between a circular trail that starts near the Tanaro and climbs into the town via steps, and a trail whose route runs from Valenza to Montecastello.
