Discover Murisengo: History, Views and Hiking Trail

Murisengo combines an old inhabited town center with a history dating back to 940, distinctive churches, viewpoints and a circular hiking trail through forests and cultivated landscapes. The town center lies on the central promontory. Historic architecture, wide-ranging views, outdoor activities and culinary themes centered on truffles and oenogastronomy shape the town’s various facets.

Castle and Medieval Traces

The history of Murisengo Castle dates back at least to 940. Under Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa, Murisengo was among the lands granted to William the Elder, Marquis of Montferrat, on October 6, 1164. The castle entrance is a historically styled medieval reconstruction built in 1891. It contains a terracotta depiction of the Assumption of the Virgin by Luca della Robbia.

Towers, Churches and Views

The Romanesque tower of San Pietro is the surviving part of a medieval church dating from the first to the second quarter of the 12th century. Today, the tower is an accessible and enhanced viewpoint. From the belvedere, the view stretches far across the surrounding hills. Artistically designed benches, a new staircase and an information panel complete this site.

The Chiesa di San Luigi Gonzaga Corteranzo stands out for its distinctive pagoda-like form and is freely accessible during services. At the time of the 1584 apostolic visitation, San Candido was a rural parish church. The parish church of Sant'Antonio Abate is considered one of the finest examples of Piedmontese Rococo. It was built from 1748 to 1754 to a design by the architect Peruzzi.

La Pirenta and the Landscape

East of Murisengo, at the foot of Montelungo, lies the sulfur spring of La Pirenta, which emerges from tuffaceous and calcareous ground. A thriving spa operation developed at Fontana La Pirenta between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Today, the spring flows from a lion’s mouth set into a neo-Gothic fountain dated 1859.

Hiking on the Sentiero Il Monte Lungo

The Sentiero Il Monte Lungo hiking trail begins in the square in front of Murisengo Town Hall, leads through the town and returns to the municipal square. Along the way, it passes through woodland and opens up views of cultivated fields and the surrounding landscape.

Truffles and Planned Events

The International White Truffle Fair “Trifola d'Or” in Murisengo was scheduled for November 15 and 22, 2026. For 2026, it was planned as an international market fair focusing on truffles and oenogastronomy. In addition, the second edition of the sensory-literary series “4for5,” with five events between July and September, was planned to begin on July 5.
