Mongiardino Ligure โ€“ Nature, History and Montebore

Discover Mongiardino Ligure

Mongiardino Ligure offers you different ways to experience nature, trails, sacred history and regional flavours. These include Parco Mongiardino, stage 09 of the Anello Borbera-Spinti, the Santuario di Nostra Signora Assunta in Montemanno, Castello di Vergagni, Chiesa di San Ruffino and Montebore. Parco Mongiardino and the Santuario in Montemanno are located at different elevations: 500 and 624 metres, respectively.

Parco Mongiardino and Hiking Stage

Parco Mongiardino covers 14 hectares at an elevation of 500 metres. The park features a barefoot sensory trail where land art works can be seen. If you want not only to look at nature but also to experience it through direct sensory impressions and artistic works, the park combines both aspects in one place.

For hiking enthusiasts, stage 09 of the Anello Borbera-Spinti begins on the SP 145 at kilometre 12 near the hamlet of Costa Salata di Mongiardino. You can park your car near the restaurant of the same name.

The Santuario in Montemanno

The Santuario di Nostra Signora Assunta in Montemanno is situated at an elevation of 624 metres, isolated and offering extensive views on the ridge separating Val Sisola from the valley of the Rio Torbora. The only access to the Santuario is via a staircase. The first reliable evidence of the Santuario dates back to 1240. For planning your trip, this site combines a striking elevation, a clearly defined access route and a long history.

Religious Tradition and Historical Traces

The Festa Patronale di San Giovanni Battista is a religious festival of the parish of San Giovanni Battista, featuring Mass and a procession.

In the village of Vergagni, Castello di Vergagni, owned by the Genoese Spinola family, stood during the first half of the 14th century. A section of wall approximately 50 metres long has survived from Castello di Vergagni. Traces of bastions and a cistern for collecting rainwater have also been preserved there. The surviving sections of wall, traces of bastions and cistern make the remains of Castello concrete and offer several points of interest for those interested in cultural history.

Chiesa di San Ruffino dates from 1248 and was later rebuilt in the 19th century. It makes it possible to trace the chronological development from its medieval construction to a later structural renewal.

Montebore and Your Choice of Accommodation

Montebore, considered a high-quality cheese, is produced in Mongiardino Ligure. When choosing your hotel, you can therefore consider whether your days should be shaped primarily by stage 09, Parco Mongiardino, the Santuario or historical traces.
