Bubbio between village history, panoramic views and Piedmontese culture

Historic Center and Location

The historic village of Bubbio preserves the Via Maestra, which dates back to the 14th century. Between the castle and the parish church are old houses, lanes, side paths and stairways. The Via Maestra thus leads through the characteristic historic village area and makes the connection between architectural heritage and the structure of the village visible. For those interested in culture, the houses, paths, castle and parish church form a specific focal point within Bubbio’s historic village area.

Bubbio is situated on a rocky terrace above the Bormida River. On the other sides, the village descends toward fields and meadows in the direction of the valley. This location shapes the transition between the densely built-up center and open landscapes, which come together directly as you explore the village. The rocky terrace and the open areas on the sides of the valley are at different elevations within the village area.

Churches and Contemporary Art

The Chiesa di Nostra Signora Assunta was built between 1750 and 1779 and has a Baroque organ. Another distinctive religious building is the Chiesa della Confraternita dell’Annunziata. The building is also known as the Oratorio dei Disciplinati and the Confraternita dei Battuti. It has a Baroque façade and a carved wooden portal from the 18th century.

There is also an exhibition space for contemporary art in the heart of Bubbio’s historic center.

Circular Trail to Bric del Moro

A circular trail begins in Bubbio’s historic center at the Via Maestra and leads to Bric del Moro. From there, a 360-degree panorama opens up over the Bormida Valley and the municipalities of the Comunità Montana Langa Astigiana - Val Bormida.

The wider surrounding region also offers a range of different landscape features. Le Ciazze is a peak in the wider regional surroundings of Bubbio, while Bric Cupazzolo is a hill near Bubbio. These two landscape features complement the view of the rocky terrace and valley with further elevations.

Castello di Bubbio is located in the immediate vicinity of Bubbio. The surrounding area also includes Casa Natale di Cesare Pavese, Castello dei Paleologi, the Aecheological Civic Museum, Parco del Castello and Terme di Acqui Terme as a park. The range of destinations thus extends from castles and a museum to parks and a place associated with Cesare Pavese.

Amaretti and Local Tradition

Pasticceria Cresta offers amaretti and hazelnut cakes. The local festival tradition includes the Sagra del Polentone, which was traditionally celebrated in Bubbio on the first weekend after Easter. The traditional date was therefore tied to the first weekend after Easter, not to a fixed calendar date in a particular month.
