Vesime: Pieve, Market and Specialties between the Bormida and Langa
Vesime combines the landscape of the Bormida Valley with historical evidence from different periods. The municipality lies between the Bormida River and the high hills of the Langa; vineyards, forests and hazelnut groves shape the landscape. This makes it a destination where regional nature, culinary traditions and historical evidence stand closely side by side.
Landscape between the Bormida and Langa
The interplay of river landscape, high hills, vineyards, forests and hazelnut groves gives Vesime a distinctive rural character. At the same time, the landscape provides the setting for local specialties and for a place whose history can be traced through several religious and cultural landmarks. If you would like to combine nature and local history during your journey through Piedmont, different facets come together here in close proximity.
A Pieve with an early history
La Pieve di Santa Maria is a religious building dating from the 5th or 6th century. It is one of the oldest places of worship in the Bormida Valley. The Pieve di Vesime already existed before the year 1000. A visible Christ Pantocrator is still preserved in the main chapel; it bears witness to a decoration dating from the 15th and 16th centuries.
Chiesa dei Battuti and religious imagery
The Chiesa dei Battuti is also known as the Chiesa della Confraternita dei Disciplinanti and is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. It contains a cycle from the Counter-Reformation period, created between 1585 and 1600 and comprising 18 scenes from the Passion of Christ. Of these, only the scene of the Entry into Jerusalem has survived almost completely. In the anthropomorphic stelae of Vesime, the male figure symbolizes potency and the female figure fertility. It represents a pregnant woman and, at the same time, the future.
Robiola, ravioli and local traditions
Vesime's local products and specialties include Robiola di Roccaverano, a local capon and ravioli al plin. The Sagra della robiola includes a tasting and sale of the cheese. There is also a competition among producers, with awards for the best wheels of cheese, as well as other accompanying events to promote the cheese. The regional cuisine is therefore represented not only by individual dishes, but also by producers, tastings and community events.
Saturday morning, Carpineta and remembrance culture
The Mercato su Piazza takes place every Saturday morning in Piazza Dante, Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, Via Romita and Via Garibaldi.
The sport fishing association A.S.D. Lago Carpineta Pesca Sportiva is associated with Località Carpineta in Vesime. The Excelsior exhibition is a multimedia space inaugurated in January 2016 and consisting of six stations. The exhibition places the construction of an airstrip along the Bormida di Millesimo in autumn 1944 within the national and local context of the liberation struggle.
