Wine, Festivals and a Historic Center

Nizza Monferrato combines a historic center with a lively succession of wine, gastronomy and cultural themes. The historic center is recognized as a UNESCO site within the “Vineyard Landscapes of Piedmont.” This makes the town particularly suitable for you if you do not want to view Italian history in isolation, but also wish to discover regional cuisine, events and historic townscapes that have developed over time.

Several festivals give the annual calendar a clear rhythm. NIZZA è Barbera is scheduled for the second weekend in May, and Nizza è Bagna Cauda for the third weekend in November. The Corsa delle Botti takes place on the second weekend in June and is a barrel-rolling race whose tradition dates back to the 19th century. Two other regularly held public trade fairs complete the events calendar: the Fiera del Santo Cristo is held on the fourth Sunday in April, and the Fiera di San Carlo on the first Sunday in November.

Architecture and Municipal History

The Palazzo Civico stands in the historic center, with a history dating back to 1353. The building acquired its present appearance during restoration work in 1883–1884. At that time, the battlements were restored and the tower was raised to its current height of 28 meters. Next to the Palazzo Civico stands the Campanòn bell tower, which is regarded as a symbol of municipal independence.

The Liber Catenae is kept in the council chamber. It is a book containing the municipal statutes of Nicea Palearum, or “Nizza della Paglia,” dating from the 13th to the 18th century. Religious buildings also tell the story of the local past: the neoclassical Chiesa di San Giovanni in Lanerio contains the San Carlo Borromeo Chapel. According to local tradition, the nobleman Antonio Pelletta commissioned the original 1311 building of the Baroque Chiesa di San Siro, on the condition that the archpriests appointed to it came exclusively from Nizza Monferrato.

Art, Sugar and Local Gastronomy

Nizza Monferrato offers art enthusiasts different ways to explore the town. The Gipsoteca Claudia Formica preserves several works by the sculptor Claudia Formica. The Art’900 gallery displays 100 works by contemporary artists, including paintings, drawings and sculptures. The Libri in Nizza literary festival adds to this cultural side of the town.

The Sug@R(T) House offers an unusual perspective. This corporate documentation center connects sugar with education, culture, information, traditions and art, and presents the history and development of sugar packaging. The multimedia Palazzo del Gusto, on the other hand, focuses on the history of local gastronomy. Together, the two places show how differently everyday culture, knowledge and design can meet in a travel destination.

The wine and food culture can also be explored directly. The Enoteca Regionale di Nizza Monferrato offers tastings of Nizza DOCG and Barbera d’Asti DOCG in historic underground Crotin. At Monferrato in Tavola, a gastronomic event held in Piazza Garibaldi, Pro Loco associations present typical dishes from the traditional cuisine of Monferrato.

Getting Around Nizza Monferrato

For mobility planning, Nizza Monferrato railway station is relevant. It is operated by RFI, is located 0.22 km from the town center and offers bus and shuttle connections for onward travel. When selecting a hotel or other accommodation for your stay, you can therefore take the location relative to the railway station into account in your personal planning if you wish to use these connections.

For cycling and walking routes, the municipal path “Città di Nizza Monferrato” is available; it connects Piazza Garibaldi with Via Don Celi. The cycle path to which this route connects links Nizza Monferrato, Calamandrana and Canelli. This allows you to consider culture, gastronomy and exercise as different priorities in your travel planning, without having to commit to just one way of traveling.

Access to the Palazzo Crova di Vaglio is restricted. Contact the municipality for opening hours and costs. This information is particularly important if you wish to include a visit to a specific historic building in your daily itinerary.
