Olmo Gentile Among Towers, Trails and Marine Fossils
Olmo Gentile combines an old town center, distinctive buildings and paths through a varied landscape. The town therefore brings together interests in architecture, local history and outdoor activities.
Castle, Old Town Center and Historic Buildings
The castle complex consists of two clearly separate parts: a tower and a residential building. The square sandstone tower probably dates from the 12th century. The residential section of the castle was commissioned by Bishop Gozzani in 1681.
The old town center also preserves remarkable details. There you will find a fortified old farmhouse, whose construction date, 1587, is carved into a portal. The Church of the Disciplinati was built by Bishop Gozzani during his stay in Olmo Gentile. The private Chapel of San Sebastiano was built in the last century on the ruins of a very old parish church; some of its forms were retained in the process. An old hayloft with a roof made of stone slabs can also be seen there, and it is still in fairly good condition.
A Landscape with Geological Character
The landscape of Olmo Gentile includes a mountain ridge resembling a promontory, as well as tuff-rich soil abundant in shells and marine fossils.
Hiking the Giro delle 5 Torri
The Giro delle 5 Torri circular trail is ideal for hiking. It connects the medieval towers of Monastero Bormida, San Giorgio Scarampi, Olmo Gentile, Roccaverano and Vengore. The circular route can be hiked in any season and runs along partly paved roads, gravel roads, farm tracks, as well as paths through woods and meadows. It is signposted with official red-and-white CAI trail markers, signs and arrows pointing to the main places and attractions, as well as 5T directional markers on the signposts.
Cycling Route, Footbridge and Different Types of Paths
A branch of the cycling route in the municipality of Olmo Gentile leads to a rocky slope with a cliff, where you cross the Tatorba stream over a small footbridge. The Roccaverano–Olmo Gentile–Serole–Bric Puschera cycling route can be traveled by car, on horseback, by bicycle or mountain bike, as well as on foot. Some sections are accessible only on foot.
A Regional Accent in the Cuisine
The gastronomy of the Langa Astigiana includes the Trattoria di Geminio, also known as Ristorante della Posta, which is considered one of the cornerstones of this cuisine.
When planning a stay at a hotel in Olmo Gentile, you can consciously weigh these highlights: the castle complex and the old town center, the circular trail with its various types of paths, or the landscape with its mountain ridge, tuff soil and marine fossils. Which location suits your needs will then depend above all on whether culture, hiking, cycling or the natural environment is to shape your stay. This keeps your choice of location aligned with the specific interests of your trip.
