Cossato between Frescoes, Textile History and Trails
Cossato combines cultural heritage with trails through the surrounding area and a landscape where castles, hills and mountains offer varied impressions.
Romanesque Forms and Late Gothic Frescoes
A central cultural landmark is the Chiesa dei SS. Pietro e Paolo. Its nave features Romanesque forms. Recent restoration work also brought valuable fragments of Late Gothic frescoes to light. They are among the most interesting and best-preserved examples of Late Gothic painting in the Biellese area.
Villa Ranzoni also takes visitors back to an earlier era: its original core dates from before 1722. Together with the church, it forms a cultural focal point in Cossato that encompasses both medieval forms and later architectural history. The town's development also reflects the changes across the Biellese area as a whole. In the 19th century, the area, like the Biellese, evolved from a region shaped by agriculture and crafts into a centre of textile and wool industrialisation.
Trails, Competition and a Cycling Tour
The Ecomuseo del Cossatese e delle Baragge connects its museum unit to the surrounding area through a network of trails. This creates a direct relationship between culture and landscape, without restricting the visit to an indoor space.
The Trail dei 5 Comuni is a trail-running and Nordic walking competition that passes through the five municipalities bordering the Parco della Pianetta di Cossato. La Biciclettata is a separate cycling tour open to everyone that passes through Cossato. The Trail focuses geographically on the five municipalities around the park, while La Biciclettata explicitly passes through Cossato.
Castles, Palaces and Mountains in the Surrounding Area
Its origins are traced back to the 10th century; at the same time, Castello di Castellengo stands on a hill overlooking the plain below. History and topography are closely linked here. The surrounding area of Cossato is also home to Castello del Guado, a castle, and Castello di Zumaglia, likewise a castle.
Other destinations around Cossato appeal to a range of interests: Fondazione FILA Museum is a museum, while Palazzo Gromo Losa di Prarolo is a palace. As landscape landmarks, Monte Rovella, Monte Rubello, Monte Terlo and Rocca dell'Argimonia are each mountains in the surrounding area of Cossato.
The Railway in Cossato's History
The Biella–Novara railway line was inaugurated in 1938 together with Cossato's new railway station. The industrial development of the 19th century predates the joint inauguration of the railway line and station in 1938.
