Camandona between the Pre-Alps and its hamlets

Camandona lies in the Biella Pre-Alps, extending along the slopes of Rocca d’Argimonia at elevations between 562 and 824 m above sea level. The municipality consists of 16 scattered hamlets on ridges and in small valleys. Lush vegetation largely conceals them: chestnut trees and towering beeches shape the landscape, while birches, ferns and heather appear at higher elevations. This distribution shapes orientation in the area.

Old paths and living traditions

Hiking trails run along old mule tracks and connect Camandona’s hamlets. The transhumance route is still used today by shepherds who continue a tradition dating back thousands of years. In recent years, it has been enhanced with ethnographic information panels. In this way, it connects the path, the landscape and rural heritage.

The Santuario del Mazzucco is part of the „I sentieri della Fede“ route, which connects it with the sanctuaries of Banchette and della Brughiera. The „Anello di Carcheggio“ walk begins at the Santuario del Mazzucco. From Callabiana, the sanctuary can be reached after the route skirts the Diga di Camandona and passes through the hamlets of Gallo and Mino di Camandona.

The Santuario del Mazzucco

The Santuario del Mazzucco was built in the first half of the 17th century on the ruins of an older chapel and is dedicated to Sant’Anna. It is an oratory in a scenic location, surrounded by centuries-old beech forests. Those who want to combine religious buildings and forest paths will find both themes in the same place.

Immediately below and beside the sanctuary of the same name lies the Mazzucco picnic area at an altitude of 900 m. It has tables, barbecue areas, play facilities for children and toilets. This makes it possible to combine a visit to the site with a break in an equipped area.

Culture in the townscape

The cultural features of the townscape include the Chiesa Parrocchiale, built around 1530, and Palazzo Sogno, commissioned by Stefano Basso in 1776. In style and layout, the palazzo recalls French Provençal „manoirs“. The hamlets of D’Agostino, Cerale and Guelpa are typical examples of 18th-century row houses. Camandona can therefore be explored through its religious architecture, individual palazzo and the row houses of its hamlets.

There are around 30 frescoes in Camandona, mostly votive paintings from the second half of the 19th century. Along the roads, mule tracks and paths connecting Camandona’s hamlets with the mountain pastures, there are more than 20 votive chapels. Here, culture can be encountered both in individual paintings and along the connections between the hamlets and the mountain pastures.

Water, valley and work

The Diga di Camandona was built in the mid-20th century. It ensures a regular water supply for the numerous textile factories located downstream in the valley and created an artificial lake that is a popular destination for anglers. Water management, the downstream textile factories and the use of the lake come together in this location.
