Solesio: Hills, History and Cultural Landscape

Solesio Among Hills and History

Solesio lies in a hilly area considered to be well oriented towards the south. The original settlement core has a classic courtyard structure and is located on the hilltop around the Oratorio Madonna d’Oropa, which is attributed to the 18th century. This combination of settlement form, elevation and religious building gives the village a distinct historical character, without reducing Solesio to a single structure. When considering the townscape, both the courtyard structure and the location of the oratory on the hilltop are relevant.

Historical Traces in the Townscape and Textile Craftsmanship

Settlement in Solesio probably began in the 17th century. The area already bore the name “Bonda de Solesio” in 1449. Among early settlers, the name suffix “de Solesio” was initially associated with the family name. The textile history is also tangible in the village: Solesio’s textile craftsmanship in the 19th century included the now-derelict Follone building on the Rio Scoldo.

A particularly striking testament to this industrial past is the former Lanificio Fratelli Zignone, now known as Fabbrica della Ruota. It began operations in 1878 and was permanently closed in 1964. Fabbrica della Ruota belongs to the Ecomuseum System of the Province of Biella. For visitors interested in culture, it connects the history of local work with the development of the village.

Hilly Landscapes, Natural Destinations and Culture in the Surrounding Area

Several elevations and natural destinations help orient visitors within the landscape. Monte Rubello is located in the immediate vicinity of Solesio. Monte Rovella and Rocca dell’Argimonia are in the area surrounding the village; the caves of Montefenera are also located there. Planning around Solesio can therefore distinguish between Monte Rubello in the immediate vicinity and the other destinations in the surrounding area.

Castello di Zumaglia is located in the area surrounding Solesio. The wider regional surroundings also include the Fondazione FILA museum, as well as Palace Gromo di Ternengo and Palazzo Ferrero. When planning cultural and historical destinations, the spatial references differ: Castello di Zumaglia is in the surrounding area, while Fondazione FILA, Palace Gromo di Ternengo and Palazzo Ferrero are in the wider regional surroundings.

Routes Through the History of Solesio

Solesio lies along the ancient mule-track route connecting Crevacuore–Mucengo–Trivero. In the past, the village was connected to the central districts by only one path. At the beginning of the 20th century, Solesio was connected to the main town by a road suitable for vehicles; this road still exists today. The ancient mule-track route and the connection to the main town by a road suitable for vehicles belong to different periods of Solesio’s history; both transport links represent different historical forms of travel in Solesio. The historical development of these connections is therefore a distinct aspect of the village and helps you understand Solesio not only as a landscape destination, but also as an organically developed settlement.
