River Landscape and Local Character

Castelletto Stura combines a distinctive river landscape with a diverse local culture. The town is one of the 14 municipalities in the Parco fluviale Gesso e Stura, which has been a protected area since 2007. In parts of Castelletto Stura’s floodplain, small ponds or channels form important wetland habitats for numerous plant and animal species.

Churches, Chapels, and Historic Local References

The town’s history includes the Confraternita dei Disciplinati, also known as the Confraternita di San Sebastiano, which dates back to the second half of the 15th century. The Cappella di San Bernardo, dedicated to Saint Bernard of Menton as a procession chapel, was decorated with frescoes at the end of the 15th century. The Chiesa di Maria Vergine Incoronata houses an icon executed by Vinay around 1858. An old Cascina belonging to the Certosa di Pesio was also part of the Grangia di Tetti Pesio.

Traditions of Dance, Agriculture, and Craftsmanship

Local culture is also reflected in traditional festivals and symbols. The folk dance Bal del Sabre was revived in 1965 with twelve dancers and a tambourine player. The local carnival mask el'val was intended to celebrate wheat as a local product. El festin ed San Martin is a historical reenactment of Saint Martin and a day dedicated to local traditions and the crafts of bygone times. For a cultural stay, this creates a multifaceted picture in which dance, agriculture, craftsmanship, and religiously shaped history stand side by side.

Riverside Trails and Cycling Opportunities

For outdoor activities, the circular route “Lo Stura a valle della confluenza” follows the northern course of the Stura River to the fountains of the municipalities of Castelletto Stura, Montanera, and Sant’Albano Stura. Castelletto Stura also took part in the “Itinerari della Salute” project. In May and June 2019, eight municipal routes for walking or cycling, each approximately 10 km long, were identified, coordinated, and established. For planning a cycling trip, it is also relevant that the Parco fluviale Gesso e Stura has the Parko Bike mountain-bike rental service; in Castelletto Stura, there is a rental point at B&B CASA DEL RICETTO.

Getting There and Choosing Where to Stay

From Turin, the described route follows the A6 motorway towards Savona, the Fossano exit, the SP191 towards Cuneo, and then the SP3 to Castelletto Stura. When choosing a hotel, you can define your priorities in advance: historic buildings, local traditions, the river course, or walking and cycling trails lead to different daily itineraries. Castelletto Stura can therefore be explored from both a cultural and a scenic perspective.
