Clavesana at the Beginning of the Langhe

Clavesana lies at the beginning of the Langhe on the Strada Provinciale 12 (Fondovalle Tanaro), between Bastia Mondovì and Farigliano. Its location on the Tanaro and at the beginning of the Langhe gives the town a clear regional setting.

Different Interests in One Place

You can plan your visit to Clavesana around different interests: the history of the Castello, the Museo storico-etnografico e di tradizione, sacred art and military history, or the landscape connections between the Tanaro, the Alps and the Calanchi. The destinations in the surrounding area complement this selection with additional museums, palaces, gardens and parks.

Castello di Clavesana and Alpine Views

The Castello di Clavesana is a castle in the Alta Langa founded in the 17th century by the Marchesi di Clavesana (Aleramici), offering views across the entire western Alpine arc. The Castello stands above the Tanaro; on this side, a large garden opens out with views of the Alps.

Museum and Sacred Art

The Museo storico-etnografico e di tradizione is housed in the former Palazzo Comunale of Clavesana. The museum comprises ten rooms. The main altar of the Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo is a work by the Genoese artists Giuseppe De Prevosti and Pietro Francesco Gaggini.

The Memoriale Ritirata di Russia is located a few metres from the Chiesa di Sant’Anna. The walk-through outdoor installation depicts the key stages of the retreat of the Corpo d’Armata Alpino from the Russian front in January 1943.

Calanchi, Elevation and the Regional Setting

The Calanchi di Clavesana are among the geosites of national importance and are associated with the ISPRA list. At 586 m, the Chiesa di Sant’Anna is located at the highest point in the municipality of Clavesana.

The wider regional surroundings of Clavesana include Monte Moro di Frabosa and the Monte Malanotte summit. Both landscape destinations extend the view beyond the immediate town and place Clavesana within a larger natural area of Piedmont.

Museums and Castles in the Surrounding Area

The area around Clavesana is home to the Museo Della Ceramica Di Mondovi', the Palazzo Fauzone, the Museo dei Cavatappi di Barolo and the Castello Falletti di Barolo.

Gardens, Parks and the Big Bench

The Giardini del Belvedere garden and Parco Europa park are located in the area around Clavesana. In 2010, the first Big Bench with this distinctive design by Chris Bangle was created on the grounds of the Borgata in Clavesana. This specific combination of landscape, public space and design complements the town’s historical and geological themes.
