Magliano Alfieri: Views, Culture and Routes through the Roero

Magliano Alfieri: Views, Culture and Routes

Magliano Alfieri is situated on a natural vantage point overlooking the Tanaro Valley and the Langhe. Its location combines these views with religious buildings, the Mulino di Magliano, the Lago dei Canapali nature reserve and routes through the Roero.

Religious Buildings with Different Stories

The Cappella di Santa Maria della Neve was rebuilt in 1893. Celebrations are held there every year on 25 April and 4 November. 25 April falls in spring, while 4 November is in autumn.

The Cappella di Sant'Anastasia was built from wood in 1997 by Russian craftsmen. The wood was donated by the Russian community of Mishkin and comes from the forests along the upper Volga. The wooden construction therefore creates a different material accent from the load-bearing brick masonry of the parish church of Sant'Andrea.

The Cappella di Sant'Anastasia is regarded as a symbol of peace and reconciliation. The parish church of Sant'Andrea provides a different architectural accent: it is built entirely from load-bearing brick masonry and reflects the Neo-Gothic style of its period of construction.

Historical Traces and Knowledge of the Landscape

The original complex of the Mulino di Magliano, with its barn, mill, millstones, hayloft, stables and residential building, dates from the first half of the 18th century. In addition to the milling operation, the complex therefore includes areas for storage, keeping animals and living. In the Middle Ages, Magliano Alfieri was a new borgo belonging to the municipality of Asti, with a military defensive function.

The landscape theatre of Magliano Alfieri explores the landscapes of the Langhe and the Roero through documents as well as tangible and intangible knowledge. Its cultural perspective therefore extends beyond individual buildings and encompasses the landscape areas of both regions.

Natural Areas and Routes through the Roero

The Lago dei Canapali nature reserve was created by restoring a gravel extraction site to a natural state. It serves to protect wildlife and belongs to LIPU's “Aree Natura” network. The area represents the transformation of a gravel extraction site into a protected natural area.

Magliano Alfieri is a stage on the Strada Romantica delle Langhe e del Roero. The town is also part of the Roero Bike Tour route. The Roero Bike Tour complements the stage with an explicitly cycling-oriented route through the Roero. The Sentieri dei Frescanti are routes through the Roero encompassing more than seven centuries of art and history and providing access to frescoes from the 10th to the 18th century.

Magliano Alfieri can be clearly matched to your travel interests: the views focus on the Tanaro Valley and the Langhe, the nature reserve on wildlife protection, and the churches and landscape theatre on architecture, history and cultural knowledge. The routes round out this picture with connections to the landscape, cycling tourism and art history.
