Ormea: Between Historic Streets and Mountain Trails

Ormea between an Alpine Setting and the Old Town

Ormea lies at an altitude of 750 m in the heart of the Ligurian Alps and in the Alta Val Tanaro. This gives you a place where an Alpine landscape and a distinctive historic town structure come together directly. The historic center is characterized by a winding labyrinth of narrow streets locally known as “trevi.” Those who take the time to explore these paths will discover a special form of townscape that is shaped not by a single attraction, but by the interplay of many small details.

These distinctive features also include an original system for street cleaning and snow removal in the historic center, locally known as “biale.” Statues and fountains made of local black marble are also scattered throughout Ormea, shaping the appearance of the town. These elements give a walk through the streets a clear local character and make the town interesting for visitors who enjoy getting to know Italian towns through their architecture, materials, and everyday structures.

Church, Manor House, and Museums

The Parrocchiale di San Martino was built around 1300 and is dedicated to Saint Martin the Bishop, the town’s patron saint. The Casa dei Signori di Ormea is another notable building: a manor house dating from the 14th century. Both buildings reflect the town’s long development, without Ormea limiting its historic character to individual representative structures.

In a private house in the historic center, the Museo Etnografico Alta Val Tanaro reconstructs a form of housing typical of the Alta Val Tanaro at the beginning of the 20th century. The Museo degli Alpini focuses on memorabilia, photographs, documents, eyewitness accounts, and other materials relating to the history of the Alpini Corps. A particular focus is placed on the wartime experiences of soldiers from the surrounding area. Ormea therefore brings together different approaches to the region’s past: the historic housing form of the Alta Val Tanaro, the town’s religious and architectural history, and personal memories from the history of the Alpini Corps.

Towers and Castle Ruins in the Surrounding Area

Castello di Ormea is thought to have originated around the 10th century. The ruins of the castle remain above the town among the pine trees. Another striking structure is the Torre dei Saraceni. It stands on a rocky outcrop at an altitude of 893 meters and was built from stones bonded with air lime. The path to the Torre dei Saraceni begins in the hamlet of Barchi and is suitable for everyone. The combination of the rocky setting, building materials, and surviving remains makes the history of the tower and castle a tangible part of exploring the area around Ormea.

Hiking, Horseback Riding, and Mountain Biking

The area around Ormea offers numerous trails for hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking. For hiking, the Balconata di Ormea provides a clearly defined sense of scale: it is approximately 40 km long and runs along the orographically left side of the valley within the municipality of Ormea at an average altitude of 1,200 m.

During its first three stages, the Alto-Tanaro circular route follows La Balconata di Ormea, a restored and signposted route promoted by the Ormea section of the CAI. It offers panoramic views and is suitable for hikes and guided school visits, especially in spring and autumn. If you would like to combine nature, physical activity, and culture, Ormea offers different scales of exploration: the streets and museums in the historic center, the path to the Torre dei Saraceni, and longer routes through the surrounding area.
