Mombasiglio: Castle, Cultural Heritage and Trails

Mombasiglio combines an impressive local history with trails through the landscape of Val Mongia. Castello di Mombasiglio, the archaeological site of Sant’Andrea, the nature trail and the Natural Bridge offer different ways to explore this Piedmontese town.

Castello di Mombasiglio and Museums

Castello di Mombasiglio stands on the summit of the town of the same name and overlooks the landscape of Val Mongia. The castle was built in the 11th century. The castle tower houses the “Museum of Marbles and Stones of the Territory”, which offers a dedicated insight into the rocks and stones of the area.

For the 2026 season, Castello di Mombasiglio is open from 21 March to the end of October: Saturdays from 2 to 6 p.m., and Sundays and public holidays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Museo Generale Bonaparte preserves a selection of prints based on watercolours, drawings and sketches. From 1802 onwards, Napoleon Bonaparte commissioned these works from the artist Giuseppe Bagetti to document and honour the most important battles of the Italian campaign. The visit lasts approximately one hour; Italian and English audio tracks are available for use on your own smartphone.

Sant’Andrea: Archaeology in the Old Settlement Core

The archaeological site of the Church of Sant’Andrea is preserved in Mombasiglio. The church was probably built in the 11th century and demolished in 1923. Sant’Andrea is mentioned in the “Statuti di Mombasiglio” of 1331. The church was an important place of worship in the old settlement core; the walls at the left corner of the façade formed the base of a Romanesque bell tower.

Circular Trails and Historic Local Connections

The municipal nature trail begins in the centre of Mombasiglio on Via Sant’Andrea and passes the archaeological site. The route extends for approximately three kilometres to the Cappella della Beata Vergine del Soccorso.

The itinerary follows Via Bernardino Viglione (Via della Punta) into the lower part of Mombasiglio and ends at Piazza del Municipio. A different type of trail is offered by stage 2A of the Sentiero Tanaro: it leads from Mombasiglio via Bric del Pilone and Bric delle Forche, uphill along an unpaved municipal road and a path.

Natural Bridge of Mombasiglio

Below the settlement of Mombasiglio, at an elevation of approximately 400 metres, a natural bridge spans the Mongia torrent. The arch of the Natural Bridge of Mombasiglio is 8 to 10 metres wide, 3 to 5 metres high and 15 metres long. The very young geological formation consists of gravel- and rubble-bearing alluvial deposits dating from the Holocene.

To preserve the arch, the road running over it is accessible only on foot or by bicycle at that point.

Local Character and Historic Location

Mombasiglio lies on a transport route that connected Piedmont with the Riviera di Ponente. Until at least the middle of the 20th century, the chestnut was a characteristic local agricultural product.
