Sambuco: Mountain Trails, Baìa Tradition and Sacred History

Sambuco combines a striking mountain landscape with sacred architecture and traditional local heritage. The village lies at the foot of the spectacular golden-yellow rock face below Monte Bersaio. The golden-yellow rock face below Monte Bersaio creates a distinct splash of color. A specific historical starting point is the Torre Campanaria di San Bartolomeo. It is the surviving part of the former baptistery church of San Bartolomeo and Sambuco’s first parish church. The five-story tower is topped by a tall pyramidal spire.

Culture and Regional History

The Cappella di San Giuliano was consecrated as a parish church in 1502 and still features medieval masonry and medieval single-lancet windows. Trails, Stages and Circular Routes

In Sambuco, the sixth stage of La Routo, the trail to Monte Bersaio and the Sentiero delle nove borgate represent different types of routes. The sixth stage of La Routo begins in the center of Sambuco and leads to Pontebernardo. It is 9.2 kilometers long, with 560 meters of elevation gain and 424 meters of descent. For planning the day, distance and elevation profile belong together on the La Routo stage; in addition to the kilometers, the ascent and descent must therefore also be taken into account at their respective elevations. Monte Bersaio can be reached from Sambuco via a trail that circles the mountain and then leads to its summit. Monte Bersaio thus appears both as a mountain above Sambuco and as a summit destination via a trail that circles it. From the summit of Monte Bersaio, there is a view that conveys the impression of being in the air. The Sentiero delle nove borgate is a circular route through Sambuco’s characteristic hamlets and is often accessible in winter when there is little snow. For winter planning, the relevant factor for the circular route is the low level of snowfall. The La Routo stage and the Sentiero delle nove borgate represent different types of routes: La Routo leads to Pontebernardo, while the Sentiero passes through the hamlets.
