Stroppo: 16 Hamlets, Church Art and Trails in the Maira Valley

Stroppo is made up of 16 hamlets in the Maira Valley. The settlements lie between 900 and 1,500 m on a north-facing slope with a sunny aspect. Together with churches, museum spaces and trails, they create a destination that combines nature, local history and outdoor activities. Between Hamlets and Forest

The 16 hamlets are spread across the sunny north-facing slope, which rises towards Elva and over the Colle di Sampeyre to the watershed with the Varaita Valley. Stroppo extends across elevations between 900 and 1,500 m, opposite a magnificent forest of silver firs and beech trees in the Maira Valley. For your planning, this combination of scattered settlements, altitude and woodland landscape provides the defining spatial setting.

Church Art in Paschero

Paschero is a cultural focal point. The parish church of San Giovanni Battista is a three-nave building; its original core may date from before the year 1000. The church houses a painting of Madonna del Rosario with saints and worshippers, dated 1615 and signed by Giovanni Antonio Pasero. It is complemented by a large oval altarpiece of Madonna del Carmine with John the Baptist and Francis de Sales by Giuseppe Bianco. The painter was paid for it between 1805 and 1807.

Traces from the Middle Ages to the Mountain School

The main apse of the Chiesa di San Peyre contains several paintings from the second half of the 14th century: Christ Enthroned alongside Saints Peter and Paul, as well as the twelve Apostles and the symbols of the Evangelists. In Stroppo, you can therefore encounter artworks from different centuries in specific church locations.

The Museo etnografico L’Escolo de Mountanho reconstructs a mountain school classroom with original objects from the early 20th century and tells the story of the mountain school from 1900 to 1970. Special openings and guided tours for groups are available on request. In the past, Stroppo had inns with stables, workshops and mills.

Trails through Hamlets and Mountain Areas

In San Martino Inferiore, several mule tracks invite you to take walks, excursions and high-mountain hikes. The 8.5 km moderately difficult circular route Giro delle chiesette di Stroppo passes through the hamlets and combines art with religious heritage. From Paschero, a 20-minute detour along a mule track leads to the Romanesque church of San Pietro at 1,233 m, built on a rocky ridge.

The Celle–Stroppo–Elva route also reaches Paschero in Stroppo. The route Anello dei Colli Cavalline, San Giovanni e Bettone starts at Borgata Paschero in Stroppo and follows a 12 km paved ascent to Colle della Cavallina. The varying route lengths and starting points help you adapt your day’s plans to the trail in question. At the beginning of the Frazione Caudano, there is a car park near the Lazzaretto di Caudano. Paschero, Caudano and San Martino Inferiore represent different areas within the widely scattered settlement structure, making it easier to plan the spatial aspects of your stay.
