Roccasparvera: Castle History, Local Trails and Chestnut Woods

Roccasparvera combines historical traces with paths through the town centre and the surrounding landscape. Roccasparvera Castle dates back to the year 1000 and was used to control access into and out of the valley. The parish church of Sant’Antonio Abate is located on Roccasparvera’s main square.

Castle Ruins, Gateway Tower and Parish Church

The castle ruins include the foundations of the towers, underground rooms that have since fallen into disrepair, and walls cut into the rock belonging to the southeastern defensive ring. Porta Bolleris is a preserved square gateway tower. Its brick, round-arched passageway is set in a stone wall.

The parish church of Sant’Antonio Abate also contains several distinctive features inside. These include four side chapels with stucco altars and canvas paintings dating predominantly from the 18th century. There is also a wooden pulpit and an organ by Giovanni Battista Bima of Saluzzo, dating from 1794. The year 1794 refers to the organ, while the stucco altars and canvas paintings are attributed predominantly to the 18th century.

Local Trails and Trail Connections

The CreaParchi themed trail Sulla via dei Bolleris is an easy walk through the town centre. It leads to the former castle site and offers views of the Forre dell’Olla. Trail P01B runs for 1.7 km from the Madonna delle Grazie Chapel in Roccasparvera to the hamlet of Castelletto. For day planning, the themed trail and P01B can be arranged as separate, short outings, each with its own destination.

Behind Roccasparvera, a former military road also runs from Vignolo to Gaiola and can be travelled on foot or by bicycle. Another trail through the Stura Valley towards Santiago de Compostela reaches the entrance to Roccasparvera after 2 km. At 2 km to the entrance, this section is clearly defined for day planning. The former military road also allows cycling as a means of transport in addition to walking.

Chestnut Woods and Surrounding Peaks

Roccasparvera’s centuries-old chestnut woods are suitable for easy hikes, which are also recommended in winter. Monte Croce is a peak in the immediate vicinity of Roccasparvera. Other peaks in the area around Roccasparvera include Monte Saben, Cima Pissousa and Rocca Vanciarampi. The chestnut woods also provide a winter option for planning hikes, as easy walks there continue to be expressly recommended during the colder season.

Further Destinations in the Area

The area around Roccasparvera also features architectural and cultural attractions. Palazzo Uffici Finanziari and Villa Oldofredi Tadini are palaces in the surrounding area. The Galimberti House Museum is a museum in the area, while Casa del Fiume is a castle nearby.

Getting There via the Stura Valley

Roccasparvera can be reached by turning right off the state road that runs through the entire valley at the hamlet of Beguda in Borgo San Dalmazzo.
