Casalborgone: History, Trails and Local Cuisine

If you would like to combine local history, woodland landscapes and regional cuisine on your trip to Italy, Casalborgone offers several different ways to do so. The town combines architectural traces from different centuries with trails through the Bosc Grand, churches with a history of their own and festivals centered on regional products.

Historic Town Center and Castle History

The center of Casalborgone developed at the top of a hill around the castle. The first written mention of a settlement in the present-day Casalborgone area comes from a document issued on May 7, 999. Following conservation work, the Castello di Casalborgone reopened as a boutique hotel.

A small ricetto was built beside the castle at the end of the 10th century. The ruins of a small tower and an entrance gate from the 16th century have survived to this day. These architectural remnants supplement the early history of the town with visible evidence from later centuries.

Churches, Chapels and Theater

San Siro is a medieval church on a hill near the Madonnina hamlet. To access San Siro, keys are issued at the parish house next to the parish church of San Carlo at Piazza Carlo Bruna 5 in Casalborgone. Santa Maria Maddalena was once the castle chapel and was expanded over the centuries.

The church of Santissima Trinità was built in the 18th century out of gratitude that the war against the French army had been survived relatively unscathed. A more recent cultural landmark is the Teatro San Carlo, which reopened in October 2025 following extensive renovation.

Woodland Trails and Nature in the Bosc Grand

A forest ridge trail runs through the Bosc Grand, connecting Bric Cerro with Bric Turniola. Thus, alongside the town center, a landscape area takes center stage in which the connection between two elevations defines the character of the trail.

The CIN4 trail connects Lauriano and Casalborgone over 7.0 km; the walking time is approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, with 339 meters of elevation gain.

In the Bosc Grand, the Ro Verda is considered a rare, centuries-old oak and a hybrid of holm oak and cork oak. The tree adds a specific natural feature of Casalborgone to the trail and landscape themes.

Festivals and Local Specialties

The traditional Fiera della Nocciola promotes regional products, handicrafts and other distinctive features of the surrounding area. On September 20, 2026, as part of the Festa Patronale della Madonnina, it includes a market and exhibition event at Piazzale Gaiato in Casalborgone.

The local pea is also part of the town’s culinary profile: it is recognized by the Piedmont region as a traditional agricultural and food product. Among other things, Gogu, a tortellone filled with peas, is served at the Sagra del Pisello. This gives you another way to experience Casalborgone—not through sights, but through regional foods and how they are used.
