Cesana Torinese: History, Mountain Landscape and Special Excursions

Cesana Torinese presents two sides that complement each other well when planning a trip: the historic center around the parish church and a mountain landscape shaped by serpentinite, fortress remains and distinctive trails. Museums, an adventure park, a long suspension bridge and a fishing reserve add cultural attractions and activities for a variety of interests.

Historic Center and Local Culture

The origins of Cesana Torinese date back to the Early Middle Ages. The historic center consists of an older core around the parish church and a second area along a pedestrian street. Nineteenth-century buildings and shops shape the townscape there. The historic center is therefore a cultural focal point combining local history, architecture and a townscape characterized by nineteenth-century buildings and shops.

The parish church of San Giovanni Battista still preserves visible forms of the original eleventh-century church in its three apses, façade and bell tower. Its portal dates from the sixteenth century and bears the coats of arms of the Delfini family. In the Museo Casa delle Lapidi, ten tomb slabs bearing geometric, religious and plant symbols are set into a wall. The museum displays these tomb slabs in a permanent exhibition and regularly hosts changing exhibitions on folk culture.

Serpentinite and Fortress History

A distinctive landscape feature can be found in the area of Monte Crouzeau, Bousson, Roche Noire and Punta Rascià. Dark green serpentinite rock occurs there, with a dense network of white veins that gives it a marble-like appearance. Serpentinite was intensively quarried in the Bousson and Cesana area between 1924/25 and the early 1970s. This combination of rock and mining history also makes the landscape interesting for visitors who want to connect geological features with regional history.

At the summit of Monte Chaberton, at an altitude of 3,130 meters, are the remains of the Batteria dello Chaberton, considered the highest fortified installation in Europe. Eight towers, on which rotating cannons were mounted, are still visible. The Batteria can only be reached on foot via an uneven mountain trail. The Cava di Marmo Verde area is likewise accessible only on foot via a mostly unpaved road. These two destinations should therefore be included in a plan that consciously takes the condition of the route into account.

Excursions for Active Pursuits and Shared Experiences

Parco Avventura Chaberton is located in the pine forest of Mollieres on the right bank of the Dora Riparia. It comprises 61 tree and high-rope elements distributed across four courses with varying levels of difficulty. Tree climbing and archery are also offered there. Another distinctive activity is the Ponte Tibetano Cesana Claviere between Cesana Torinese and Claviere, in the gorges of San Gervasio. The route is 544 meters long and consists of three consecutive bridges over the Piccola Dora.

The access chalet for the Ponte Tibetano is located at the first roundabout exit at the entrance to Claviere when arriving from the direction of Cesana Torinese. From there, a downhill path leads to the start of the bridge in 15 minutes. For quieter hours, there is the Riserva di Pesca Cesana fishing reserve, which permits fishing along a 4.5-kilometer stretch of the Ripa stream. The reserve also includes a no-kill section between the bridge of Rollieres and the bridge of Bousson.

Another reference point for planning, formulated independently of the season, is the Cesana-Sestriere. It is held every year and is part of the European Championship for historic automobiles.
