Morainic landscapes and trails

Colleretto Giacosa is part of the Ivrea Morainic Amphitheatre, the Anfiteatro Morenico di Ivrea, or AMI for short. In the built-up town centre, glacial verrou rock ridges emerge as prominent rock formations. The higher-lying part of the town forms a panoramic balcony overlooking vineyards, orderly stands of trees, orchards, historic vines and vineyard huts. The town is thus characterised both by its geological formation and by a cultivated cultural landscape.

Seven trails that can be explored independently are available for discovery. Information boards, web information, QR codes and trail markers are part of their facilities. Some local trails are connected to routes in neighbouring municipalities and can be completed on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. This allows visitors to explore the landscape and its various uses at their own pace.

Church, chapel and bell tower

The Invenzione di Santa Croce parish church was built from 1772 onwards to a design by the architect Sartoris. Its site had previously been occupied by a church originally dedicated to Saint Peter. The parish church is accessible via steps and a ramp, enabling people with reduced mobility to enter.

The bell tower is also part of the town's architectural character. It contains two large bells: one was installed in 1929 and the second in 1951; the latter was recast after breaking. The bell tower is probably, at least in part, the oldest building in Colleretto Giacosa. The Santa Liberata Chapel is regarded as a symbol of the town.

Giuseppe Giacosa in Colleretto Giacosa

Giuseppe Giacosa is buried in a family plot in the northern part of the cemetery in Colleretto Giacosa. At his burial in 1906, a bronze bas-relief depicting the Muse of Comedy was installed. Casa Giacosa “La grande Arca” became a meeting place for a cultural circle centred around Giuseppe Giacosa.

The Giacosa Festival is dedicated to the dramatist, poet and librettist Giuseppe Giacosa. In addition, Settembre Giacosiano takes place every year, featuring installations and events that honour Giuseppe Giacosa and the region. In different ways, both events continue the connection between the town and its namesake's cultural heritage.

Canavese wines and Erbaluce

Colleretto Giacosa lies within the production area for Canavese wines with the protected designation of origin DOC. The vineyards in Colleretto Giacosa are also located in an area considered suitable for producing Erbaluce wines. Together with vineyards, historic vines and vineyard huts, this connection with wine shapes the landscape character of the higher-lying part of the town.
