Domodossola lies at the centre of seven Alpine valleys and is a hub for trade and different cultures. Historic buildings, art and natural history collections, the Saturday market, as well as rail and road connections, provide various specific points of interest in the town.

Historic centre, art and collections

In the centre of Domodossola, Palazzo Silva still displays Renaissance features. Its simple, smooth façades are decorated with large cross-shaped windows. The windows are made of marble from the quarries of Crevoladossola.

The historic centre of Domodossola is freely accessible on foot and barrier-free for residents of the city and the neighbouring municipalities.

The second floor of Palazzo San Francesco houses an art gallery and an archaeological department. Sacred art and a selection of drawings complement the two departments on the same floor. The Museo di Scienze Naturali “Mellerio Rosmini†in Domodossola has a nineteenth-century collection. It includes animals, insects, plants and minerals.

UNESCO heritage and Sacro Monte

Domodossola is one of the nine complexes comprising the UNESCO World Heritage site “Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardyâ€.

The Sacro Monte Calvario di Domodossola Special Nature Reserve was established in 1991 to protect the artistic, historical, architectural and natural heritage of the Sacro Monte.

Market and regional products

The large Saturday market in Domodossola includes a food section. This section features typical products, local and organic vegetables, honey and wine. Anyone wishing to visit the food section should plan their visit for Saturday.

Arrival and connections

Domodossola’s international FS railway station is a hub for important railway lines in Southern Europe. The narrow-gauge Ferrovia Vigezzina-Centovalli connects Domodossola with Locarno in the Swiss canton of Ticino and offers a scenic panoramic journey. When travelling to Domodossola, rail and road access can be considered separately based on the FS railway station and the SS33. Domodossola can therefore be reached both via international rail connections and via the SS33 Superstrada dell’Ossola.

The SS33 Superstrada dell’Ossola leads to the Domodossola exit.

Summits, church and destinations in the surrounding area

Punta I Pisoui and Cima Larie are peaks in the area surrounding Domodossola. Cima la Sella and Testa di Menta are also located in this area.

The Chiesa Parrocchiale della Beata Vergine del Rosario is a church in the vicinity of Domodossola.

In the wider regional area around Domodossola are Gmeinalp, a ruin site, and Palazzo Flaim, a palace. The geographical range therefore extends from the immediate vicinity to the wider regional area.
