Mergozzo on Lake Mergozzo: Lake, Stone and History

Mergozzo combines Lake Mergozzo with the history of its town and culture. Along the lakeshore in Mergozzo, the houses of the “Riva” district are arranged in an amphitheatrical layout.

Lakeshore, swimming and easy paths

There are many beaches suitable for swimming at Lake Mergozzo. For a shorter hike, the municipal Itinerario 4 from Bracchio to the megalithic complex “Cà d’la Norma” is a good option. The archaeological and nature trail is classified as easy, covers 3 km and takes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. This makes it possible to combine impressions of the lake and landscape with a clearly manageable outing.

Churches, museums and the world of stone

The Chiesa Parrocchiale della Beata Vergine Assunta was inaugurated in 1610 on the site of an existing Romanesque church, which is documented in a record from 1133. The thirteen Cappelle della Via Crucis provide another historical highlight. They were built in 1821 and restored between 2002 and 2005; during the work, their original 18th-century colors were brought to light again.

The Museo Archeologico is located in Mergozzo at Via Roma 8. The Mu.Ma.G. Museo del Marmo Rosa e del Granito is located in Albo di Mergozzo, Via Francia 29. Both places complement the study of the region from different perspectives. The Ecomuseo del Granito di Montorfano encompasses the entire area of Mergozzo and the surrounding areas, including the extraction sites for Candoglia marble, Montorfano white granite, Mergozzo green granite and Baveno pink granite.

Historic corners and challenging mountain paths

The old village of Sasso is grouped around a building dating from the period of the communes, known as the “Castello”. Those looking for a significantly more challenging undertaking will find the Via Ferrata Montorfano, a difficult via ferrata rated D. The route has very exposed sections; in addition to being particularly sure-footed at heights, a via ferrata set is required. Access can begin at the lakeshore of Mergozzo via the Sentiero A58, which leads to the via ferrata in about one hour. The centuries-old elm tree is also regarded as a symbol of Mergozzo.

Getting there and finding your way around

For travel to Mergozzo, bus line 5 Verbania–Domodossola stops in the town. The town also has a railway station on the line to Domodossola. Within the municipal area, the Chiesa di San Graziano is located on Via S. Graziano in the hamlet of Candoglia. These different reference points help you weigh up the choice of accommodation location between the lake, town center, cultural attractions and the other districts, without confusing the routes and sights.
