Bognanco combines mineral water, trails through Val Bognanco, and the Cascata La Valletta in Bognanco Fonti. Bognanco Fonti is also home to the spa centre and the Dagliano gorges; historic connections run over the Passo di Monscera, while a mountain-bike crossing leads to Domodossola.
Mineral Water with a History of Its Own
The S. Lorenzo spring produces a bicarbonate-sulphate mineral water with alkaline-earth properties. The springs of Bognanco emerge from the rock and are naturally carbonated.
According to tradition, the mineral waters of Bognanco were discovered in 1863 after a local shepherdess noticed the “burning” taste of the spring water she had been drinking. From 1928 onwards, Bognanco mineral water was bottled using Italy’s first fully automated process.
Trails through Val Bognanco
The Bognanco Fonti–San Lorenzo trekking route begins in Bognanco Fonti and leads to San Lorenzo. For route planning, this section differs from the Via del Monscera: it connects two places in the valley, while the other route includes Domodossola, Bognanco, the Passo di Monscera, and Gondo.
The Via del Monscera connects the Sacro Monte Calvario in Domodossola with Gondo via Bognanco and the Passo di Monscera. There, it joins the Stockalper Trail, which leads to Brig via the Simplon Pass.
The fourth stage of the Via Stockalper also passes through Val Bognanco. In Bognanco Fonti, it includes the spa centre and the Dagliano gorges.
When planning a day trip, valley trails, pass crossings, and travel via Domodossola already differ in their starting points. Bognanco Fonti, San Lorenzo, the Passo del Monscera, and the railway station in Domodossola represent different starting or destination points.
Waterfall and Historic Circular Trail
The Cascata La Valletta is located in the village of Bognanco Fonti and can be reached in just a few minutes on foot. The waterfall consists of two distinct drops.
In addition, a pedestrian circular trail was started in Bognanco Fonti in autumn 1929; it was formerly known generally as the Passeggiata dei Limoni. The name Passeggiata dei Limoni is an earlier name for the circular trail; construction began in autumn 1929.
Mountain Biking and Getting There
The mountain-bike crossing of the Passo del Monscera descends via Graniga, San Lorenzo, and Bognanco Fonti to Domodossola.
Bognanco can be reached via the international FS railway station in Domodossola. The station is served by connections from Bern and Milan; a scheduled bus to Bognanco departs from the bus station. Travel by public transport can be divided into a rail journey to Domodossola followed by a bus ride to Bognanco.
If you would like to add more destinations to your trip, you can also visit Passo, Cavaglio-Spoccia, Cicogna, Ceppo Morelli, Pontegrande, Trontano, Premeno and Premosello-Chiovenda.
