Serravalle Sesia can be explored through several clearly distinct experiences. Historic buildings stand alongside a museum with archaeological, artistic and ethnographic exhibits; there are also high plateaus, rocks and paths offering wide-ranging views. If you would like to combine culture with walks, climbing routes or a cycling tour, you will find different ways to organize your stay according to your interests.
Castles, Museum and Churches
The historic side of Serravalle Sesia includes several remarkable buildings. Castello degli Avondo was built between 1462 and 1467. The present appearance of Castello di Serravalle is a 19th-century Neo-Gothic reconstruction commissioned by the Avondo family. Both facts offer different chronological perspectives on the architecture of the town.
The Museo di Storia d'Arte e Antichità "Don Florindo Piolo" is located on the ground floor of Castello Avondo. It houses archaeological finds from Roman and medieval times, paintings from the Piedmontese school, and ethnographic objects. The Romanesque Pieve di Santa Maria di Naula is mentioned in Codice Vaticano 4322. This was compiled in the 10th century and contains the first known list of the parishes of Vercelli.
The religious buildings also have their own distinctive features. The Santuario di Sant'Euseo stands on a rocky spur and was expanded from an earlier chapel into a sanctuary in the 17th century. The Parrocchiale dei Santi Giovanni Battista e Nicolao contains frescoes by Borsetti and Peracino. This allows you to combine architectural history, religious architecture and painting on a cultural walk.
Another cultural facet can be seen in the Carnevale di Serravalle Sesia. It dates back to 1897 and began with the mask of the Duca del Fossale. The original costumes of Mugiun III and the Mugiuna with their court, as well as the musical instruments and costumes of the folkloric band Busca Matas, are permanently exhibited at the Museo Don Florindo Piolo at Via Torchio 10 in Serravalle Sesia.
Panoramic Views and Rocky Landscape
Serravalle Sesia offers two distinct landscape destinations for wide-ranging views. The ruins of Castello di Vintebbio are located on a high plateau with a 360-degree panorama over the valley crossed by the Sesia River, from the Vercelli plain to Monte Rosa. Pietra Groana rises among the hills of Serravalle at the entrance to the valley. From its summit, the view extends over the plain, the lower part of the Biellese and Valsesia, as well as the central peaks of Monte Rosa.
Walks, Climbing and Events
Pietra Groana offers single-pitch and multi-pitch routes, mostly running over slabs. From Regione Quazzo, access follows firebreak path no. 706 and takes about 30 minutes on foot to reach the base of the wall. A panoramic excursion from Serravalle Sesia leads to Pietra Groana. For quieter days, the small Chiesa della Madonna della Neve is a destination for summer walks.
The ruins of Castello di Vintebbio can also be included in your personal daily itinerary: from the main piazza of the Vintebbio district, they can be reached via a walk of about 15 minutes. Castello di Vintebbio is also accessible via paths from the Vintebbio hamlet and from the area around Bowling di Serravalle Sesia. Since 2018, the Carnevale di Serravalle Sesia committee has organized an annual mountain bike ride through the hills.
When considering a hotel for your trip to Serravalle Sesia, it helps to think about your preferred daily rhythm. For culture-oriented days, Castello, Museum, Pieve, Santuario and Parrocchiale are the main attractions; those seeking activity can organize Pietra Groana, the paths to Castello di Vintebbio, the Chiesa della Madonna della Neve or the mountain bike ride as specific themes. This keeps your planning aligned with your actual interests.
