Varallo: Sacro Monte, Art and Mountain Views

Varallo combines religious art, regional painting, scientific collections and a pre-Alpine landscape. Religious Art at Sacro Monte

The Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie stands in Varallo at the foot of the ascent to Sacro Monte. Inside is the Parete Gaudenziana, a fresco cycle from 1513 depicting 20 episodes from the life and Passion of Christ. The church was conceived as a visual and spiritual introduction to the devotional route to Sacro Monte.

Sacro Monte di Varallo was created at the end of the 15th century by the Franciscan friar Bernardino Caimi as a recreation of holy sites in Palestine. The site thus combines religious imagery with a historical perspective on the development of the devotional route. Museums between Painting and Science

In the Palazzo dei Musei, Varallo houses the Pinacoteca di Varallo and the Museo Calderini, bringing art and scientific collections together under one roof. Founded in 1886, the Pinacoteca documents the development of Valsesian painting from the 15th to the 19th century and includes works by Gaudenzio Ferrari and Tanzio da Varallo. The Museo Calderini collection covers mineralogy, zoology, archaeology and ethnography.

The Casa Museo Cesare Scaglia is located in the building where the painter Cesare Scaglia lived and worked. In three rooms with their original furnishings, the Museo Cesare Scaglia displays paintings, furniture, household furnishings, books and jewellery. The Bottega dell'Artigianato presents typical handicrafts from Valsesia: Puncetto lace, Scapin slippers, wood carvings and soapstone works. The historic Palazzo Scarognini – D’Adda is also home to the Museo della Pesca, with historic fishing equipment.

Pre-Alpine Landscape and Trails

Sacro Monte di Varallo is a 22-hectare protected area in the Piedmont region. It lies in a pre-Alpine setting at an elevation of 455 to 650 metres. The Sentiero di padre Gallino leads from the Sacro Monte area to the hills above Varallo and offers views of the Alps, Monte Rosa, Valsesia and Val Mastallone.

For sport-oriented days, the Via Ferrata della Falconera offers a physically and technically demanding via ferrata. It includes 400 metres of safety cable, overhanging sections and horizontal rock ledges.
