Villasalto: Industrial Heritage, Trails and Expansive Panoramas

Villasalto reveals its character particularly where mining history, old trails and open landscapes meet. This gives you a range of experiences to consider when planning your trip: you can explore the industrial history of Su Suergiu, compare trails with different lengths and walking times, and focus on viewpoints and springs.

Industrial Heritage of Su Suergiu

The Su Suergiu Mine operated between the 19th and 20th centuries and was one of Europe’s most important centres of antimony production for decades. The site includes a Liberty-style administrative building, a foundry, mine galleries, furnaces and workers’ housing. Together, these elements form a valuable industrial heritage site. The Su Suergiu Mining Village combines Villasalto’s industrial and social history and lies in the green valley of the Rio Sessini.

The “Su Sergiu” Industrial Archaeological Museum displays materials and equipment that also illustrate the miners’ lives. The museum is located in one of the buildings in the complex, which consists of several buildings. As a result, this site brings together both the technical remnants of mining and the social history associated with it.

Trails between Gardens, Vineyards and Springs

The Sentiero dei Minatori connects the Su Suergiu Mine with Armungia and follows a mule track; the route takes approximately 40 minutes. The Sentiero dei Minatori also follows old paths between gardens and vineyards and offers beautiful panoramas of the surrounding landscape. A shorter option is the Villasalto–Caboni trail (C 402): it begins in Villasalto’s “sa Mitza ‘e Caboni” district, is easy to walk and leads downhill to the spring known as Caboni. The trail is 800 metres long and takes 15 minutes to walk.

Panoramas and Water-Rich Landscapes

The Vedetta panoramica di Monte Gènis is located at 880 metres above sea level and offers particularly far-reaching views over the entire Gerrei, Sarcidano and Barbagia di Seulo. The Vedetta panoramica di Monte Gènis can be reached via a connecting trail along the Si-CAI Z26 ridge, which is also designated C-400-A. The Miniera Su Suergiu–Punta Pardu trail (C 401) passes through a habitat rich in flora and fauna and offers beautiful views of the valley below. In addition, the Villasalto forest district has a large number of water-rich springs throughout the year.

Pilgrimage and Regional Ties

The Santuario di Santa Barbara was elevated to the status of a pilgrimage church on 5 April 2015 by Arrigo Miglio, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Cagliari. It has been the object of particular veneration for centuries. During its feast, held on the first Sunday, Monday or Tuesday in June, believers from Gerrei, Trexenta, Marmilla, Campidano, Sarrabus, Barbagia, Goceano, Logudoro and Ogliastra come to Villasalto.
