Beach and Coastal Character
Porto Tramatzu is a coastal destination whose character is shaped by its long sandy beach, Mediterranean maquis and the wetlands in the Villaputzu area. At the same time, historical traces range from mining to medieval castle ruins and a restored coastal tower. Nature observation, water sports and Sardinian cultural history thus come together here.
The Porto Tramatzu sandy beach complex is approximately 1,260 metres long. It lies at the far end of a bay and north of the Punta Su Tramatzu headland. Set amid the Mediterranean maquis, a long sandy beach of very fine sand with golden reflections stretches along the coast. Under the name PORTO TRAMATZU, Porto Tramatzu is one of the official bathing waters.
Stabilimento Balneare Vela Sport is located in Località Porto Tramatzu, 09040 Villaputzu (CA). The beach is associated with windsurfing and is considered a suitable destination for diving.
Wetlands and Natural Environment
Pardu Mareus is part of the wetland ecosystems of Villaputzu designated as Sites of Community Importance (SCIs). In the Villaputzu area, after crossing the coastal alluvial plain, the Flumendosa reaches the sea and forms an ecologically valuable wetland system at its mouth. This wetland system is suitable for birdwatching and extended walks.
Marina and Historical Traces
The Marina di Villaputzu has approximately 400 berths for boats with a maximum length of up to 30 metres.
In the municipality of Villaputzu, the mining village of Baccu Locci is an example of classical mining architecture from the early 20th century in Sardinia. The mining complex operated until 1965 for the extraction of arsenopyrite and comprises around thirty historic buildings. The Baccu Locci mining village can be reached via the SS 125. Near the Corr’e Cerbu bridge, an unpaved road branches off at kilometre 82 and follows the stream inland; after approximately 10 kilometres, it reaches the mining village.
Monte del Castello di Quirra bears the ruins of the medieval castle of the same name and lies in a scenic setting between the Altopiano di Cardiga and the sea. The coastal tower, begun in 1592, has been restored, made accessible by the municipality and offers panoramic views of the entire coast.
Cuisine and Cultural Events
The cuisine of Villaputzu includes spit-roasted porceddu, served on cork trays and covered with myrtle leaves.
The Villaputzu festival and traditions programme includes the Festival delle Launeddas on the 7th, with a concert by launeddas players from across the island. Another event was the Cimento invernale di Nuoto, scheduled for 6 January at 10:30 a.m. in Porto Tramatzu at Vela Sport.
