Tabarchian History at RĂ ixe
The multimedia museum Rà ixe presents the history and traditions of the Tabarchians through testimonies from the community, video interviews, archive material and family photographs. The exhibition tour extends across two floors. 20 exhibition panels and tablets with QR codes allow visitors to read or listen to the history of the Tabarchini in five languages. The Rà ixe archive also offers a virtual journey through the coastal towers of Calasetta, Carloforte and Sant’Antioco.
Art and Historic Sites
The MACC is housed in a restored former slaughterhouse. The MACC’s permanent exhibition was donated in 2000 by the artist Ermanno Leinardi. This means that, alongside local history, an independent art venue is also part of the itinerary.
Beaches, Coves and Coastal Landscapes
Spiaggia Grande stretches for more than a kilometre along the western side of the island of Sant’Antioco. It has a shallow, sandy seabed that slopes gently and is located on a sheltered bay. Calasetta’s beaches include La Salina, where soft sand forms dunes around a pond described as a bird oasis. Cala Lunga is an emerald-green fjord leading from the open sea to a sheltered beach. Nido dei passeri is a pair of coastal rocks that provide refuge for birds. These places showcase the coast in different forms—from a long sandy beach and dunes to sheltered coves and striking rocks.
Traces of the Past
The Domu de Janas di Tupei is a prehistoric site where terracotta, bronze and clay objects have been found. Sottotorre takes its name from a watchtower built by the House of Savoy in 1756. Today, Sottotorre hosts exhibitions and cultural activities. Prehistoric finds, a watchtower and contemporary cultural events thus represent different time periods to explore.
Surfing, Boat Trips and San Pietro
There is a surf school at Spiaggia Grande. Boat trips are offered at Spiaggia Grande and in the surrounding area. From Calasetta, you can take the ferry to the island of San Pietro.
