Villa Bellavista, Galleria Villamarina and the Piazzetta di Monteponi represent different ways of exploring the town’s history. Architecture, Garden and Mining History
Villa Bellavista has a U-shaped floor plan with three above-ground floors and a basement. Behind the villa lies a garden with panoramic paths; from there, views open up over the surrounding area and the mining village of Monteponi.
Palazzo Bellavista was restored and returned to the public after years of vacancy following the end of mining activities. Today, it is an outpost of the University of Cagliari. The Monteponi mine competed with the contemporary Montevecchio mine for the top position among the mining producers of the young Kingdom of Italy.
The technical side of the mining district can also be traced through its striking facilities. The mine’s drainage system included an unusual drainage gallery almost six kilometres long, running from Pozzo Vittorio to Fontanamare beach. A private railway connected the mine’s extraction facilities with a port facility near Portoscuso. The port facility was dedicated to President Baudi di Vesme and was named Porto Vesme.
Galleria Villamarina and Practical Information
Galleria Villamarina was excavated in 1852 at 174 metres above sea level. It connected the two main shafts, Pozzo Sella and Pozzo Vittorio Emanuele.
Pozzo Sella was built between 1872 and 1874 to drain the water that hindered mineral extraction. The external structure was later used for the mine’s technical facilities, including a mechanical workshop, forges and a carpentry workshop. A guided tour of Galleria Villamarina lasts about 50 minutes and takes place on level ground over relatively even unpaved terrain. The approximately 50-minute duration can be taken into account when planning the day as a clearly defined visit.

Hiking Trails through the Mining District
The D-313 hiking trail begins in Monteponi and leads to Nebida, stopping at Monte Scorra along the way. The first stage of the Cammino Minerario di Santa Barbara also reaches the Piazzetta di Monteponi. From Palazzina Bellavista, this stage continues along an unpaved track. The piazzetta is home to the church dedicated to Saint Barbara.

The Monteponi mine can be reached via Via Cattaneo at the end of the built-up area of Iglesias along the SS 126.
