Sant'Anna Arresi between Porto Pino and the Nuraghi
Accommodation in Sant'Anna Arresi
Porto Pino: beach, pine groves and wetlands
Sant'Anna Arresi is particularly defined by Porto Pino: the four-kilometre-long sandy beach is divided into a first and a second beach section. The promontory of Porto Pino is covered with rare Aleppo pines, holm oaks and junipers, as well as Mediterranean maquis. The landscape therefore extends beyond the beach and encompasses a variety of coastal scenery.
In Porto Pino, the Pineta Candiani is located in the municipality of Sant'Anna Arresi. It lies within the Special Area of Conservation “Promontorio, dune e zona umida di Porto Pino”, which is part of the European ecological network Natura 2000. The coastal ponds of Porto Pino, Maestrale, del Corvo, Is Brebeis and Foxi also contribute to the natural landscape: they provide habitat for stilts and flamingos.
Archaeological sites between the Bronze Age and the Byzantine period
The Nuraghe Arresi dates from the Middle Bronze Age and is dated to the 15th to 14th century BC. It is a nuraghe of the “a tancato” type, around which the present-day town developed. At the archaeological site of Coi Casu, the complex consisted of a nuraghe and a surrounding village. Visible ruins have been preserved there among mastic shrubs and wild olive trees. The first construction phase of the site dates from the Bronze Age.
The settlement of Coi Casu was inhabited again after a presumed interruption lasting several centuries: from the Late Punic period in the 3rd to 2nd century BC through to the Byzantine period in the 6th to 7th century AD. The archaeological site is located on the provincial road between Sant'Anna Arresi and Porto Pino.
Further remains can be found in various parts of Sant'Anna Arresi. Fonte Via Torino is a nuragic archaeological monument dating from the 14th to 10th century BC. The Chiesa di Sant’Anna is dated to the period between the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century. The Torre di Porto Pino is a coastal tower of historical and cultural value. The Nuraghe Sarri in Medau Sarri is a nuraghe from the Nuragic period. In Cambuxiu is the “Villaggio Neolitico di Porto Pino”, a pre-Nuragic hut. The “Approdo Fenicio Punico” in Porto Pineddu is a historic Phoenician harbour.
Historic coast and cultural events
The Bay of Porto Pino also has several layers of history. During the Phoenician-Punic period, it served as a seaport, and under Roman rule as a trading centre. The Tonnara di Porto Pino is a tonnara of identity-defining value in Sant'Anna Arresi.
For those interested in culture, Sant'Anna Arresi has hosted the festival Ai confini tra Sardegna e Jazz since 1985. The festival takes place in early September in Piazza del Nuraghe. In addition, the event Notti d'estate a Porto Pino was scheduled in 2026 from July to September on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
