Masainas reveals its distinctive features through different landscapes: the Nuraghe Fais archaeological complex represents the town’s early history, while Is Solinas, with its white sand, wetlands and paths, forms the area’s natural setting. Religious traditions, agro-pastoral buildings and an agricultural heritage that remains visible in the fields, hills and regional products complete the picture.

Archaeology, Village History and Tradition

The Nuraghe Fais archaeological complex is located in Masainas and dates from the 14th to the 10th century BC. The monumental olive tree "Sa Matta ‘e sa Cruxi" is another prominent landmark in the centre. It was added to Italy’s national register of monumental trees in 2017.

Traditional agro-pastoral buildings known as Furriadroxius can still be seen in Masainas today. They are old sheepfolds that were later converted into residential buildings. These structures thus preserve a tangible link between former pastoral farming and later residential use.

The Festa della Madonna della Salute is a religious tradition in Masainas; its first recorded mention dates back to 1856. The procession of the Madonna della Salute in Masainas is accompanied by Launeddas players and folklore groups wearing traditional costumes.

Is Solinas, Wetlands and Paths

Is Solinas beach stretches for more than one kilometre of white sand and lies on the Gulf of Palmas. From the Porticciolo, a wooden footbridge with a wooden promenade leads to Is Solinas beach.

There are four paths and three cycling and walking routes in the Masainas area; four of them lead to the beach and Porticciolo of Is Solinas. Signposted paths in Masainas are suitable for long walks and pass through Carignano vineyards, fields of Sardinian spiny artichokes, wetlands and old Medaus.

The Stagno Baiocca wetland is a natural area inhabited by various species of waterbirds, including greater flamingos. The Baiocca and Porto Botte wetland area is classified as a Site of Community Importance (SCI).

Fields, Hills and Regional Products

Masainas’s cultivated fields shape a landscape of changing colours and geometric forms. The hills are characterised by Mediterranean plants such as Carignano, myrtle, broom, rockrose and strawberry tree.

Carignano is considered a symbol of Masainas’s agriculture. Sardinian spiny artichokes with protected designation of origin are also grown in Masainas.

The paths through vineyards, artichoke fields, wetlands and old Medaus bring together different landscapes within a single walk. For visitors wishing to explore Masainas on foot, the signposted paths therefore offer an opportunity to experience agricultural areas, natural environments and historic rural structures together.
