Turri Among Fields and Rural Culture
Turri has a character that is closely connected to the changing fields. The agricultural landscape changes throughout the year as the crops grown there change. For visitors, this means an environment whose appearance is not static but is shaped by the particular use of the fields at any given time. Agriculture, historic buildings and festivals offer different ways of experiencing Turri.
Saffron and Simple Food Culture
On the second Sunday in November, visitors in Turri can see saffron fields in bloom and take part in harvesting and cleaning the flowers. The event connects the landscape with hands-on work involving the plant and gives your travel plans a clear seasonal focus. Su murzu also represents a simple snack: it consists of bread, onions, cheese and sausage.
Rural Everyday Life
The Casa Museo dell’Arte Contadina conveys the realities of rural everyday life through furnishings, traditional costumes, equipment and work tools. These tools are connected with the production of grain, oil and wine. In this way, they reveal areas of work that complement Turri’s rural character, just as the changing crops complement the landscape.
Farmhouses and the Monte Granatico
Turri still has numerous traditional farmhouses with large portals. The oldest of these portals date from the 19th century. The Monte Granatico is housed in a building from the second half of the 19th century, whose window lintels are decorated with Palladian designs. As a grain bank, the Monte Granatico lent grain to farmers on the condition that they repay it after the harvest. Architecture and former food supplies come together here to tell a closely connected local history.
Historical Traces in the Landscape
The monumental cemetery of Sant'Elia preserves a carved stone regarded as the ancient baptismal font of Turri’s former Byzantine church. This church is now completely destroyed. The Parco degli Ulivi Secolari is located in the Molinu area, at the exit from Turri towards Tuili. The remains of the Cabonu nuraghe lie in the Turri area on the border with the municipality of Ussaramanna, about one kilometre east of the village, on a hill 185 metres above sea level. The complex consists of a mastio and four added towers and is now completely underground or buried.
Festivals Throughout the Year
The grain harvest and threshing festival, Festa Regionale della Mietitura e Trebbiatura del Grano, has been celebrated in Turri every year on the first Sunday in July for more than two decades. On 20 January, the Feast of San Sebastiano is Turri’s patronal festival; it includes religious ceremonies and a procession through the village streets. Another event is the Sagra del Melone, held in Turri on the first Sunday in September. The Mostra degli Spaventapasseri also takes place as part of this festival; it is also known as Is Mustaionis.
