Waterfalls and landscapes on Monte Linas

On the outskirts of Villacidro, Sa Spendula lies in the granite landscape of Monte Linas. The waterfall drops a total of around 60 metres in three stages. The surrounding landscape is also geologically diverse: it includes crystalline schists from the Palaeozoic era and pink granite. The peaks reach 1,136 metres above sea level at Punta Acqua Zinnigas.

Parco di Villascema lies at the foot of the Linas massif. The Rio Leni flows through the park; downstream, its water reaches a large artificial basin. For a hike, Trail 109 leads from the Cantina Ferraris starting point in Parco di Monti Mannu through a dense holm oak forest to the 72-metre-high Cascata di Muru Mannu.

Churches, archaeology and local museums

The Chiesa di Santa Barbara is Villacidro’s oldest church and dates back to the 13th century. It was built in the Gothic-Aragonese style over an earlier Romanesque structure. Together with the Chiesa delle Anime Purganti and the Oratorio di Nostra Signora del Rosario, it forms a group of three buildings on the town’s main piazza. The Museo di Santa Barbara is housed in the Oratorio di Nostra Signora. It displays sacred furnishings from the parish church of Santa Barbara, including statues, silverwork, altars and wooden furnishings. The collection also includes silverwork by important Sardinian silversmiths such as Cabras, Usay and Mamely.

The Necropoli Ruinas is an archaeological necropolis in Villacidro dating from the 1st to the 3rd century AD. The Civico Museo Archeologico Villa Leni offers a broader chronological perspective; since 2003, it has been housed in the Montegranatico. It contains numerous original finds from important archaeological sites in the surrounding area. The collection includes finds from the Late Neolithic period between 3500 and 2700 BC, from the Phoenician-Punic and Roman periods from 1300 to 1200 BC, and from the Early Middle Ages. A large proportion of the finds comes from the Villacidro area.

Visiting the Villa Leni Civic Archaeological Museum is currently possible only by registering by telephone or electronically with the Municipality of Villacidro, as fixed visiting hours have not yet been established. The Farmamuseo Sa Potecaria is currently closed; no possible reopening date is known. The restored Mulino Cadoni, by contrast, retains its three-storey interior with wooden floors and ceilings. Today, the building houses the Museo di Paese d’Ombre, which uses scenographic and modern exhibition techniques to provide insights into the works of writer Giuseppe Dessì, particularly his novel “Paese d’ombre”.

Festivals, cherries and culinary experiences

Parco di Villascema is known for its extensive cherry orchards. The Sagra delle ciliegie takes place there on the first Sunday in June. The “Laboratori del gusto” in Villacidro offer a practical connection to the region’s food culture. In workshops, you can learn how bread, wine, olive oil, honey and confectionery are made, and discover other local agricultural and food products.

The festival calendar also reflects agricultural and religious traditions. Sant’Isidoro, the patron saint of farmers, is celebrated in the second half of May with a procession on an old cart pulled by decorated oxen. It is accompanied by decorated ox carts known as “tracas”, as well as depictions of typical rural and domestic scenes. The celebrations for San Sisinnio begin on the Friday before the first Sunday in August with a solemn procession from the parish church to the rural church dedicated to him in the San Sisinnio district.
