Mamone Between History and Plateau

Mamone offers three clearly distinct points of interest for planning your trip: the history of the Casa di Reclusione Mamone, the Cammino di Bonaria and the granite plateau. Depending on whether you focus on culture, hiking or nature observation, your attention will therefore turn to different aspects of the area.

Historical Traces of the Casa di Reclusione

The Istituto penale di Mamone was founded in 1882. The Casa di Reclusione Mamone includes wine cellars dating from the 1930s. They house historic winemaking equipment and large oak barrels; the largest barrel holds approximately 21,000 litres. The wine cellars therefore form a distinct historical focus for visitors interested in material artefacts and the history of winemaking.

Exceptional access to the Casa di Reclusione Mamone was possible as part of the FAI event in 2025. Registration for the exceptional visit was required by Sunday, 5 October 2025. This access was part of a time-limited event and offered a special insight into the Casa in 2025.

Cammino di Bonaria and Historical Trails

The stage of the Cammino di Bonaria is classified as moderate to challenging and marked with the trail’s blue arrow. A digital route of the Cammino di Bonaria can begin directly at the Casa di Reclusione Mamone and continue to Bitti. A large part of the trail follows a former mule track known as the “via della transumanza”. This route was used by shepherds who moved from the plateaus of Bitti and Buddusò to the milder areas around Olbia. If you plan to walk the Cammino, you should take the stage’s moderate-to-challenging classification into account.

Landscape at Tepilora Nature Park

On the route through Tepilora Nature Park from Bitti to SS Annunziata, the SP50 heads towards Mamone through stands of cork oaks and holm oaks as well as cistus undergrowth, before reaching the fields of the penal colony used as pastureland. For a landscape-focused drive, this section combines woodland, undergrowth and open areas used as pastureland.

The granite plateau of Mamone lies northwest of Onanì. Golden eagles breed on this plateau. Those who focus on landscapes and birds of prey can include this area in their travel plans as a distinct nature and observation focus. The granite landscape and golden eagle population thus complement the historical and hiking-related themes of the area.

Getting There and Choosing Accommodation

Mamone can be reached by car via the SC Bitti – Mamone or the SP Lodè – Mamone. Mamone can also be reached by a shuttle service on the Sologo – Bitti – Mamone route. This means that travel options include both car and shuttle connections.

When choosing accommodation for a trip to Mamone, it is worth deciding on your main focus early on. If you prefer historical sites, the Casa is the main attraction; for hiking plans, the difficulty of the Cammino stage is decisive, while the plateau appeals to those interested in nature and landscapes.
