Historic Centre and Museums

Nuoro’s historic centre can be explored on foot. Old cobbled streets lead through areas with old stone houses, courtyards, arcades and small squares. This makes a slow, observant approach to exploring the city ideal, with the architectural details themselves becoming part of the experience.

MAN is a permanent public institution dedicated to the research, preservation and promotion of modern and contemporary art. The museum opened to the public in 1999. Its collection comprises around 850 works by Sardinian artists from the late 19th century to the present day and continues to grow. The Museo archeologico nazionale di Nuoro is housed in one of the city’s most important 19th-century palazzi.

The Tribu Museo comunale Francesco Ciusa offers another connection between architectural history and art. It is housed in the city’s former courthouse, a historically protected building, and permanently houses the regional collection of works by the artist Francesco Ciusa, who was born in Nuoro. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions and art workshops.

The Casa museo Grazia Deledda is located in the birthplace of the writer Grazia Deledda (1871–1936), who was born in Nuoro. There you can see the writer’s manuscripts, photographs, various documents and personal belongings. A visit therefore focuses on a specific personality and on the city’s literary history.

Archaeology and Sardinian Traditions

Tanca Manna is a Bronze Age village. The site combines traditional archaeological-site visits with experimental archaeology and entertaining educational workshops. During the regularly held workshops, you can make clay vessels, prepare and bake bread, and watch demonstrations of bronze casting. This means that the archaeological past is conveyed not only through preserved traces, but also through practical activities.

The Museo della Vita e delle Tradizioni Popolari Sarde is Sardinia’s largest ethnographic museum and is divided into ten thematic rooms. Particularly unusual is a room displaying 350 traditional types of bread. The exhibition thereby combines everyday culture and regional culinary history with a clear thematic arrangement.

At the Museo della Ceramica, you can see works documenting important Sardinian art schools and significant Sardinian masters. The historic Casa Chironi is being converted and adapted for this museum. The history of the building is therefore also part of the development of this cultural venue.

Monte Ortobene: Granite, Wildlife and Climbing Opportunities

Monte Ortobene covers 1,600 hectares and features high granite cliffs and depressions. This landscape is a habitat for mammals, birds of prey and other bird species. Climbing opportunities are also available at Monte Ortobene. Nature observation and activity therefore come together in an area whose geological character is particularly prominent.
