Baunei: Limestone Cliffs, Coves and Local Culture
Accommodation in Baunei
Baunei among Rock Landscapes and Culture
Baunei combines striking rock landscapes with a culture reflected in churches, festivals and local specialities. On the Golgo plateau, Su Sterru has been a natural monument and tourist attraction since 1993. The opening measures 25 metres in diameter and widens to 40 metres at the bottom. Along the galleries and walkways of the Grotta del Fico, you will find stalactites, stalagmites and columns; the paths run above the fossil bed of an ancient river.

Su Sterru can be reached on foot through a landscape with lava flows over limestone, ferns, moss-covered holm oaks and small ponds. This gives you a nature experience in which the route itself is shaped by different landscape features. The geological formations and vegetation give the area a character that cannot be reduced to a single viewpoint.
Coves and Activities for Different Interests
On the coast, water experiences with different focuses take centre stage. The particularly clear, fish-rich waters of Cala Biriola are suitable for diving as well as swimming with a mask and snorkel. The shallow seabed of Cala Mariolu is suitable for both snorkelling and diving. At the Piscine di Venere, numerous freshwater springs along the offshore rocky coast and very light limestone on the predominantly sandy seabed contribute to bright, clear colours.
If you would like to compare challenging activities, the Selvaggio Blu trekking route offers a clearly defined course: it begins at Pedra Longa and ends at Cala Luna. The route is suitable exclusively for experienced, well-trained hikers with good navigation skills and solid climbing abilities. In the Villaggio Gallico climbing area, there are 40 climbing routes with difficulty grades ranging from 5b to 7c+. In addition, there are numerous climbing crags in the Baunei and Santa Maria Navarrese area.
Planning and Concrete Orientation
Another specific point of orientation is the rural church of Chiesa di San Lussorio. It is located three kilometres below Baunei, near the small village of Ardali, which belongs to the municipality of Triei, and is easily accessible from Baunei via the Usuonu road.
In the centre of Baunei is the parish church of Chiesa di San Nicola di Bari. It was probably built in the 17th century on the ruins of an older chapel. At Genna Olidone, the remains of buildings and equipment from a silver-bearing lead ore mine operated in the first half of the 20th century have been preserved. Both places complement the natural experiences with visible traces of faith, settlement and work.
Local Traditions and Everyday Culture
Local cuisine includes Su cunfettu, a typical Baunei wedding sweet made from honey, almonds and orange peel. Sa Coua Baunesa is a traditional wedding celebration from Ogliastra that revives old Baunei traditions. The celebrations in honour of San Pietro took place on the last Sunday in June. The Museo Etnografico Sa Dommu Eccia was open daily from May to October.
Other Destinations in the Area
If you would like to consider other places for your trip in addition to Baunei, you will find Jerzu, Arbatax, Marina Di Gairo, Villanova Strisaili, Arzana, Torre di Bari, Bari Sardo and Gairo here.
