Historic Sites in the Centre

The parish church of San Gavino Martire is located in the historic centre of Elini. It was built in the 20th century on foundations dating back to the 16th century. Another religious landmark is the Sanctuary of Madonna del Monte Carmelo, which dates from the 17th century. The two buildings represent different historical periods and, during a walk through Elini, give you an opportunity to consider the development of the town not only through its landscape but also through its religious architecture.

Holm Oaks, Macchia and Springs

Parco Carmine is located above the town centre. The park contains centuries-old holm oaks and characteristic plant species of the Mediterranean macchia. Here, you can encounter typical elements of Sardinian vegetation in a specific setting above the town. In the upper part of Elini, you can also walk among holm oaks and along springs that flow all year round. This combination makes the area interesting for travellers who do not want to view nature only from a distance, but also want to combine their stay with a walk through the landscape.

Hiking Trail with Views of the Golfo di Arbatax

A specific destination for hiking enthusiasts is the Parco Carmine – Masone Crabas trail (T 123). It leads to the Località “Monte Nuragi”. There, you can see the remains of a nuraghe and a viewpoint overlooking the Golfo di Arbatax. If, when choosing your activities, you like to alternate between nature, history and landscape, this trail offers a clear thematic focus among the sights associated with Elini.

A Festival and a Special Focaccia

The Sagra de s’anguli ‘e cibudda is part of the local everyday culture. The Pro Loco of Elini has been holding the festival for several years on the first Sunday in August. It has since become a regular date for visitors from Sardinia and the tourist destinations in the province. The focaccia prepared at the Sagra is made with onions, potatoes, courgettes and tomato. For your travel planning, the date is therefore particularly interesting if you would like to experience regional cuisine in connection with a local event.

Elini and the Trenino Verde

An old granite railway station from the late 19th century is located in the centre of Elini. It is connected to the tourist railway line of the Trenino Verde. The historic Trenino Verde della Sardegna line connects the sea with the mountain region. The station and railway line thus offer you another way to access the history and landscape of Sardinia: in addition to religious buildings, olive groves and hiking destinations, the former railway infrastructure is also part of Elini’s tangible townscape.

Practical Information on Site

In the Località “Funtana Manna” on Via Giordano Bruno in the municipality of Elini, staying or passing through near the wooden beams is prohibited until they have been secured. You should therefore not plan to use this area as a place to stay during your visit to the town. For further travel planning, you can also discover Osini, Baunei, Tortoli, Triei, Jerzu, Girasole, Villagrande Strisaili and Arbatax.
