Aglientu between Coast and Granite

The coast of Aglientu is 32 kilometres long and alternates between granite elevations and 22 kilometres of beaches. It is fully protected and lies within the two Sites of Community Importance, Isola Rossa-Costa Paradiso and Monti Russu. This makes the coastal landscape the focus of this destination, with its granite formations, beaches and protected status appealing to different interests when planning a trip.

The Site of Community Importance Monti Russu almost entirely encompasses the coastal strip located within the municipality of Aglientu. The Nuraghe Finucchjiaglia creates a distinctive landscape impression: it stands on a hill and offers views across the entire surrounding area as far as the sea. The structure is a complex construction with a central tower and a trilobate bastion.

Trails and Activities on the Water

Those who want to explore Aglientu on foot will find a network of trails of around 117 kilometres in the municipality, suitable for trekking and running. On the water, the Rio Vignola adds to this range of activities: from its mouth, the river can be navigated upstream for around three kilometres by canoe or kayak; its course can then be explored further through canyoning.

Towers, Nuraghi and Ecclesiastical History

The Torre Spagnola also connects history with a specific location. From Vignola Mare, it can be reached on foot via the beach and the mouth of the Rio Vignola; the mouth is dry in summer. The tower was built in 1605 as part of a defence plan implemented by the Spanish administration of Philip II against raids by the Saracens. It was intended to guard a tuna-fishing station established a few years earlier.

Other historic buildings include the Nuraghe Tuttusoni. Its central tholos, meaning a false dome, is 6.15 metres high; the nuraghe was built entirely from granite. The Chiesa San Pancrazio was built around the 17th century. Its festivals are celebrated on 12 May and 5 August. Together with the Torre Spagnola and the Nuraghe Finucchjiaglia, the church thus offers another historical perspective on Aglientu.

A culinary aspect is represented by the Festa del Turista “Sagra della salsiccia arrosto e del formaggio”. It is a regular, recurring event and reached its 52nd edition in 2024.

If you are looking for a hotel in Aglientu, you can base your decision on your own travel interests: the coast and protected areas define the landscape focus, the trail network represents trekking and running, while the Rio Vignola, Torre Spagnola, nuraghi and Chiesa San Pancrazio open up further specific themes.
