Beaches and coves around Murta Maria
Porto Istana consists of four beaches separated from one another by small rocky strips. The nearby area around Murta Maria also includes the beaches Spiaggia di Murta Maria, Spiaggia Le Saline, Spiaggia di Porto Istana and Spiaggia dell'Isola dei Cavalli.
Li Cuncheddi is located near Murta Maria, in the small cove of Cala Sos Passizzeddos. Li Cuncheddi is also a destination for divers and surfers. Porto Istana is likewise visited by numerous enthusiasts of underwater activities.
Hike and historical traces
There is an approximately 7 km hike at Capo Ceraso in the area around Murta Maria. At approximately 7 km, the hike can be planned as a separate day activity; breaks and the available time window can therefore be estimated realistically. Another path leads through the Poltu Casu area nearby. Concrete plaques still present there recall the period when the Regia Nave Officina Vulcano was located there.
Museums, ancient site and castle
The ancient site Holy Well Sa Testa is located in the area around Murta Maria. The same wider area also contains the Museo del mare Olbia and the Museo archeologico di Olbia archaeological museum. The Castello di Pedres o Pedreso castle is another attraction.
In Murta Maria, a clearly visible sculpture of Saint Joseph stands on the steps of the parish square. It was made entirely from marble from Orosei.
Festivals, sport and local activities
From 29 May to 31 May 2026, three days of religious and civic celebrations in honour of Saint Joseph and the Madonna took place in Murta Maria. The celebrations took place along Viale Murta Maria and Viale Porto Istana. In addition, Murta Maria was listed as the venue for the “Mototerapia Day” motorcycle gathering on 2 May at 11 a.m.
At Murta Maria Sport, Capoeira is taught as more than a martial art and is combined with music and dance. Murta Maria Sport offers annual Capoeira courses. Workshops on Afro-Brazilian dance, samba and percussion are also offered there.
Classification of the locality
Marina Maria is considered a seaside resort and is a locality in the Murta Maria hamlet of the municipality of Olbia.
