Tanaunella combines the history of a former harbour area with the landscapes and water experiences of Porto Ainu. In addition, there are religious festivals, a nuraghe and a cycling tour that explore the area in different ways. Porto Ainu combines beach, pond, dunes and underwater terrain; in Tanaunella, buildings, its harbour past and feast days are added to the mix.

For orientation on site, Tanaunella has a tourist information office at the Pineta di Sant’Anna. Its location near the Pineta di Sant’Anna gives local orientation a specific place in Tanaunella.
Behind Porto Ainu beach lies a small pond that partially dries up during the warm season. The landscape also includes a dune system made up of primary dunes with juniper growth. The pond brings a seasonal change to the coastal area, while the dune system with its juniper growth forms a different type of landscape. Nature observation therefore involves both the water level and the sand and vegetation.

Harbour history and Sardinian traces
Historically, Tanaunella served as a port of call for Phoenician, Turkish and Carthaginian ships. Porto Ainu was one of Tanaunella’s two natural harbours. Its former harbour function thus links Tanaunella with the coastal section of Porto Ainu and with several historical groups of ships.
In Tanaunella, the nuraghe with a tower bears witness to the fact that the ancient indigenous Sardinian civilisation was firmly rooted in the area around Budoni. The Church of San Sebastiano in Tanaunella dates from the 20th century. Festivals with a local character
Tanaunella’s patronal festival in honour of San Sebastiano includes celebrations from 18 August to 20 August. As part of the San Sebastiano festival, traditional Gallurese dances take place in Piazza Garibaldi to the sound of an accordion. Another occasion is the festival in honour of Sant’Antonio Abate de su fogu in Tanaunella, which takes place on 16 January. For travel planning, it is relevant that the two festivals take place in January and August, respectively.
Cycling to Tanaunella
The “Budoni verso sud” cycling tour follows the SS125 for a short distance south towards the town of Tanaunella. The route therefore sets a different tone from the water experiences of Porto Ainu and the historical themes in the town. For cycling travellers, the southerly direction on the SS125 provides the geographical framework for the short connection.
