Nughedu San Nicolò lies in a long, narrow valley through which the Riu Molinu flows. The town is situated at an elevation of almost 600 meters in a gently hilly landscape with some more prominent elevations. Between Palazzotti and Piazza Marconi
In the historic center, narrow streets are lined with palazzotti dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Elegant eclectic surrounds on doors and windows often stand out; on the top floor, arcades or altane are among the defining design elements. Piazza Marconi forms the center of the town. Elegant buildings dating from around 1900 surround the square, which also features a 19th-century fountain.
At the entrance to Nughedu San Nicolò, unusual houses lie in the valley, built into rock fissures and finished with façades made of hewn stone blocks. The craftsmanship of wood, leather and iron is also one of the important economic sectors of Nughedu San Nicolò. Alongside its architecture, both give the town a clearly recognizable artisanal character.
Churches with art, history and views
Nostra Signora de Su Canale is dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel and is considered the most impressive of Nughedu's rural churches because of the wild beauty of its natural surroundings. The main church of San Nicola contains a mural by the painter Aligi Sassu. Among the figures depicted, Nikita Krusciov and Silvana Mangano can be recognized.
The stone-built church of San Pietro stands on a vegetation-covered hill offering impressive panoramic views. It was built between 1400 and 1500. On another hill stands the church of Sant’Antonio, which is dated to around 1600. Archaeological traces in the town
The permanent exhibition “L’uomo, la natura, la civiltà, immagini di una comunità del Monte Acuto” in Via Cagliari displays finds from various archaeological sites as well as documents relating to historical events in the town. The archaeological tour includes two monuments in the area of Nughedu San Nicolò, including the sacred Cuccuru Mudeju well. The cultural spectrum therefore extends from documented local history to older traces of human settlement.
Festivals and community traditions
The celebrations in honor of Saints Peter and Paul, held at the end of June, include the Sagra de Sas Panafittas and a large outdoor bonfire. Four-part singing has regained its community function in Nughedu San Nicolò over the past 15 years and is now present at all important communal occasions. These traditions show the town as a community in which festivals, music and religious occasions are closely connected.
Natural features and local character
The small Sa Conca ‘e S’Abba cave is located in the hamlet of Monte Sa Mela. It is of particular natural-historical interest because of a significant bat colony during hibernation. Together with dairy farming, which is one of the important economic sectors of Nughedu San Nicolò, this natural aspect broadens the view of the town.
