Tissi among Churches, Hypogea and Limestone Plateaus

The Chiesa di Santa Vittoria dates from the second half of the 12th century. For practical orientation on site, its ground-level entrance from the adjacent square is important: from there, it is also easily accessible to people with reduced mobility.

The Chiesa di Santa Anastasia is located along the main thoroughfare of Tissi’s town centre and borders the Oratorio di Santa Croce on its southern side. The church was extensively rebuilt in the 17th century; Romanesque forms are visible on the exterior. The Romanesque building is dated to the second quarter of the 12th century.

The Oratorio di Santa Croce lies next to the bell tower of the Chiesa di Santa Anastasia and is integrated into its structure. Based on stylistic observations, it is dated to the second half of the 12th century. In this part of the town centre, several building structures and different historical layers can therefore be directly related to one another.

Hypogea and Archaeological Traces

A different form of architectural history is represented by the Ipogeo di Sas Puntas. It is considered one of Sardinia’s significant hypogea with an architecturally designed façade. The stela-shaped element carved into the rock and framed by an arch is characteristic of a giants’ tomb. The Ipogeo di Sas Puntas is also interpreted as an example of the continuation of the hypogeal tradition into the Bronze Age.

The Ipogeo pluricellulare Ziprianu ‘e Fora complements these underground remains with a differently structured layout. It originally consisted of six carefully executed chambers with finely smoothed surfaces. If you pay attention to construction methods and spatial organisation at archaeological sites, comparing the designed façade of Sas Puntas with the chambers of Ziprianu ‘e Fora offers two different perspectives.

Limestone Plateau and Rolling Hills

The area around Tissi is predominantly hilly. The Nuraghe Monte Sant'Andria lies at the western edge of an extensive limestone plateau. Only one course of stone remains of the nuraghe; traces of circular and square hut structures can be found nearby. The site thus represents a landscape where archaeological remains and open terrain occur together.

S’Attentu lies southwest of Tissi’s town centre, at the western edge of a limestone plateau with steep slopes. The structures of the archaeological complex extend across an area of at least 10,000 m². The surviving cocciopesto surfaces may indicate a bathing building or a cistern. For your planning, the combination of the extensive site, its hillside location and the cautious archaeological interpretation is particularly relevant here.

Museum and Park at Locali EX-MA

The Locali EX-MA houses an ethnographic museum dedicated to art and folk traditions. The complex includes an equipped park with tables, benches, barbecue facilities and a children’s playground.
