Beach and wetland define Platamona
Platamona combines a long, wide beach with fine sand and the Stagno di Platamona wetland. The beach lies at the centre of the Gulf of Asinara. The Stagno di Platamona has a different character: the wetland is approximately 3 kilometres long, up to 250 metres wide and covers around 95 hectares. The Rio Buddi Buddi feeds the Stagno and supplies it with fresh water. The extent of the Stagno brings water, shoreline and vegetation together into a natural area that differs from the open sandy beach.
Endemic and rare plant species grow in the Stagno di Platamona and along its shores. Stagno e Ginepreto di Platamona is also a Site of Community Importance (SCI) and belongs to the Natura 2000 network. Entry to this SCI area is free.
Orientation at the beach
A staircase at the Rotonda di Platamona provides access to the beach. In the bathing area, there are wide wooden walkways suitable for wheelchairs, pushchairs and pedestrians. They are connected to arrival areas and reserved parking spaces for people with disabilities.
Platamona Beach has 16 equipped seating areas with parasols, chairs and support handrails for spending time by the water. Showers are also part of the beach facilities. Until 30 September 2026, free supervised bathing is offered at Platamona Beach from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm.
Nature observation and paths at the Stagno
The wetland provides a habitat for breeding waterbirds. These include mallards, purple swamphens, marsh harriers and white herons. Stagno di Platamona is therefore suitable for nature photography and birdwatching. Those who want to observe plants and animals attentively will find a different subject for their visit at the Stagno, with its endemic and rare plant species and breeding waterbirds, than at the open sandy beach.
Several paths also incorporate the Stagno and its shore landscape. The “In bici sul Litorale” route can be completed by bicycle or on foot and leads to Stagno e Ginepreto di Platamona. The Cammino di Santu Jacu includes a guided section through the pine forest at Stagno di Platamona, which partly runs along wooden walkways. The path runs between pine and juniper trees, parallel to the shoreline of the wetland. The “In bici sul Litorale” route and the Cammino focus on different aspects: one offers a choice between cycling and walking, while the other includes a guided section through pine forest and along wooden walkways.
Getting to Platamona
From Sassari, the SS 131 heads north and shortly after Ottava leads to the Platamona/Buddi Buddi turn-off. Another reference point is the SS 200 between Porto Torres and Castelsardo: after 8.5 kilometres, the turn-off to Platamona follows. The SS 131 from Sassari and the SS 200 between Porto Torres and Castelsardo therefore serve as specific reference routes for the journey.
